Deli Clerk Job Description

Position Summary

Reporting to the Store Manager, the Deli Clerk is to assist shoppers at the deli counter by recommending foods, providing samples of meats and cheeses, cutting, weighing, packaging, and pricing meats, cheeses, and fish, and responds to customer inquiries and requests. The Deli Clerk also maintains clean work areas, updates display, and informs customers about specials, promotions, and latest items.

Position Responsibilities

• Greet customers and provide excellent customer service while taking customer orders.
• Serve customers quickly and efficiently.
• Stay informed on all food options, including dietary options, to offer to customers.
• Prepare and slice a variety of deli meats, vegetables, and cheeses to customer's specification, serve meat and fish.
• Properly handle and operate meat and cheese slicers, cutting tools, scales, and all other deli equipment.
• Store raw and deli meats in designated containers and storage areas to prevent spoilage.
• Take catering orders (via phone or in person) for events or parties, ensuring accuracy and timeliness of delivery and pickup.
• Complete regular display case checks (including Meat/Fish display case): practice quality control, correct tagging and pricing, cleanliness, display cases are stocked and merchandised nicely and complete daily inspections to ensure freshness.
• Hand out samples to customers, urging them to try new products.
• Demonstrate a thorough understanding of deli recipes, current promotions, and weekly specials in the deli department as well as around the store.
• Update supplier information on products, including selling points, nutritional information, and shelf life, and communicate changes with management.
• · Inform management of equipment issues or malfunctions and when deli supplies are getting low, and order needed items.
• · Receive and store food supplies, equipment, and utensils in refrigerators, cupboards, and other storage areas.
• · Record temperature of food and food storage areas such as refrigerators and freezers.
• Remove trash, sweep, and mop floor and take out garbage to bins outside.
• Keep records of the quantities of food used and wastage.
• Maintain a calm demeanor during periods of high volume or unusual events and set a positive example for the shift team.
• Provide guidance and assist with on-the-job training of team members.
• Respond to orders, questions, concerns, and complaints in a polite and efficient manner.
• Maintain a clean and safe work environment including the hot food counter, deli area and food storage areas.
• Adhere to all Food Safety Protocols, Standard Operating Procedures, Health and Safety, Corporate Policies, and other programs and initiatives.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Deli counter or food preparation experience
• Ability to work in high stress, fast-paced environment with minimal supervision.
• Communicate and interact well with customers and co-workers in a positive and professional manner
• Must be able to work in teams and assist in other departments including but not limited to meat/fish counter, kitchen, cash registers
• Ability to maintain a clean work environment.
• Physical demands include standing, squatting, lifting (maximum 20lbs), bending, reaching and scooping for prolonged periods of time throughout the day.
• Must be able to attend regular department team and staff meetings
• Must have the flexibility to work evenings and weekends

Job Types: Full-time, Part-time

Pay: $17.95-$18.50 per hour
