Full job description
Maplewood Care Society is seeking a temporary Director of Care .
This temporary assignment will initially be full-time for approximately six months. Following the incumbent’s return to work, the assignment is expected to transition to a part-time job-share arrangement, anticipated to be 0.4 FTE / 15 hours per week. The successful candidate must be available and willing to work both the initial full-time schedule and the subsequent part-time/job-share schedule.
The role will support continuity of operations, effective communication, timely follow-up, and clinical leadership. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with the care manager at each site and the leadership team to ensure appropriate handoff, shared accountability, and consistent support for staff and operations.
Position Summary
The Director of Care is a senior leadership role responsible for the planning, leadership, oversight, and evaluation of resident care and resident services across Maplewood Care Society’s long-term care homes.
Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Director of Care provides clinical and operational leadership within a person-centred model of care, in alignment with Maplewood Care Society’s Mission, Vision, Values, policies, procedures, strategic priorities, and applicable legislation, regulations, professional standards, and contractual requirements.
The Director of Care oversees nursing and care services, social work, therapeutic and recreation services, allied health services, and external clinical service providers, including physicians, pharmacy, laboratory, dental, foot care, and other contracted clinical partners. The Director of Care is accountable for ensuring that safe, high-quality, resident-centred care and services are delivered consistently, respectfully, and in compliance with regulatory and professional standards.
As a member of the Leadership Team, the Director of Care contributes to organizational planning, quality improvement, risk management, labour relations, resident and family engagement, and the development of a respectful, collaborative, and accountable workplace culture.
Key Responsibilities
Resident Care and Service Delivery
- Provide senior leadership and oversight for resident care and resident services at Maplewood House and MSA Manor.
- Ensure that care and services are delivered in accordance with a person-centred model of care and reflect the physical, emotional, cognitive, social, cultural, and spiritual needs of residents.
- Provide leadership to Care Managers, Social Work, Therapeutic Services, and other assigned clinical and resident service areas.
- Oversee the development, implementation, evaluation, and continuous improvement of resident care programs, clinical services, and therapeutic/recreation programs.
- Promote interdisciplinary care planning and ensure effective collaboration between nursing, care staff, physicians, allied health, pharmacy, families, residents, and external partners.
- Ensure appropriate systems are in place to support clinical assessment, care planning, documentation, follow-up, and resident safety.
- Support ethical decision-making and lead or participate in complex resident care discussions, including family meetings, care conferences, and clinical risk discussions as required.
- Ensure external clinical service providers meet service expectations and support resident care needs in alignment with Maplewood’s standards and applicable requirements.
Quality, Risk, and Regulatory Compliance
- Ensure resident care and resident services comply with applicable legislation, regulations, licensing requirements, professional standards, Fraser Health requirements, and Maplewood Care Society policies and procedures.
- Lead and support continuous quality improvement initiatives related to resident care, clinical practice, safety, documentation, incident trends, complaints, satisfaction survey results, and care outcomes.
- Monitor and analyze quality indicators, incident reports, complaints, audit results, and other performance data to identify trends and implement improvement plans.
- Develop, implement, and report on performance measures related to resident care and resident services.
- Provide reports and updates to the CEO, Leadership Team, and Board committees, including the Quality & Safety Committee, as required.
- Ensure policies, procedures, standards of practice, and standard operating procedures related to resident care are reviewed, updated, implemented, and evaluated.
- Participate in emergency preparedness, infection prevention and control, fire safety, licensing, accreditation, and other organizational readiness activities as required.
People Leadership and Human Resources
- Provide leadership, direction, coaching, and support to assigned managers and staff.
- Promote a respectful, collaborative, accountable, and resident-focused workplace culture.
- Ensure appropriate recruitment, orientation, education, training, scheduling, supervision, and performance evaluation processes are in place for assigned departments.
- Support staff development by identifying learning needs, promoting continuing education, and ensuring education programs are relevant, accessible, and evaluated.
- Provide leadership in attendance management, performance management, workplace investigations, and corrective action in accordance with Maplewood policies, applicable collective agreements, and legislative requirements.
- Participate in labour relations matters, including grievance meetings, labour-management meetings, and related processes as required.
- Ensure staff and contractors understand and comply with their responsibilities related to resident care, safety, confidentiality, emergency preparedness, infection prevention and control, and respectful workplace expectations.
- Coordinate student placements in nursing and care areas by liaising with educational institutions, instructors, preceptors, and internal leaders.
Strategic and Operational Planning
- Participate in the development, implementation, and evaluation of Maplewood Care Society’s strategic and operational plans.
- Develop and implement departmental goals, priorities, and workplans that align with organizational direction and resident care priorities.
- Support operating and capital budget planning for assigned departments and ensure responsible stewardship of resources.
- Identify opportunities to improve systems, workflows, resident outcomes, staff engagement, and operational effectiveness.
- Contribute to organizational decision-making as a member of the Leadership Team and support cross-departmental collaboration.
Communication and Stakeholder Engagement
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with residents, families, staff, physicians, Fraser Health, regulators, contractors, educational institutions, community partners, and other stakeholders.
- Communicate clearly, respectfully, and effectively in routine, complex, and sensitive situations.
- Respond to resident and family concerns in a timely, professional, and solution-focused manner.
- Represent Maplewood Care Society professionally in internal and external meetings related to resident care and services.
- Chair and participate in committees and meetings as required, including Leadership Team meetings, clinical meetings, infection prevention and control meetings, Medical Advisory meetings, nursing meetings, general staff meetings, and other internal or external forums.
Other Duties
- Maintain professional competence and current knowledge of long-term care trends, clinical practice standards, regulatory requirements, leadership practices, and quality improvement.
- Participate in conferences, seminars, education sessions, and independent learning as appropriate.
- Act as Manager-on-Call as scheduled.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing from an accredited institution is required.
- Current practicing registration with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives is required.
- Master’s degree in nursing, health administration, leadership, or another relevant field is preferred.
- Minimum of 5–7 years of progressive clinical leadership experience in health care, preferably in long-term care, seniors care, or a related setting.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of management experience in a unionized health care environment, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Demonstrated knowledge of long-term care, resident-centred care, clinical practice standards, BCCNM standards, applicable legislation and regulations, licensing requirements, and quality improvement practices.
- Strong clinical assessment, critical thinking, and decision-making skills.
- Experience leading interdisciplinary teams and working collaboratively with physicians, allied health professionals, families, regulators, and external partners.
- Demonstrated experience in labour relations, performance management, investigations, grievance processes, and collective agreement administration.
- Strong communication, organizational, planning, and project management skills.
- Ability to lead through complex, urgent, and sensitive situations with sound judgment and professionalism.
- Proficiency with electronic health records, clinical documentation systems, Microsoft Office, and data/reporting tools is preferred.

This is a temporary assignment. The full-time portion of the assignment is time-limited and is expected to transition to part-time/job-share hours following the incumbent’s return to work.
