Job Description:

Position Purpose Summary:

  • Carries out resident activity programs such as arts and crafts, sports, music, woodworking, cooking, gardening, exercises, dinner parties and outside bus trips. Sets up and organizes equipment for all activity projects and calendar of events. Teaches the techniques of related activities to patients/residents, oversee resident activity programs and reports problems and/or changes to the Recreation Coordinator and/or Director of Care.
  • Carries out resident activity programs outside the facility. Ensures that the resident has appropriate clothing and the necessary equipment for the activity including medications, confirms the details of the proposed activity with the Nursing Team Leaders [RN/RPN and/or LPN] and/or Clinical Care Coordinator, coordinates the movement of residents during these activities and teaches the residents in their understanding of the activity.
  • Provides direction to volunteer[s] in their understanding of related techniques during activity programs.
  • Maintains inventory of equipment, tools and materials and reports malfunctioning supplies to the appropriate personnel.
  • Provides input for resident care plans and feedback at care conferences.
  • Transports one or more passengers by operating vehicles such as vans and/or buses with seating capacities of between 11 and 25 passengers including the driver.
  • Performs a variety of routine inspection/maintenance duties on vehicles and equipment such as securing load, cleaning, checking belts, lights and tires and maintaining fluid levels; recommends vehicle and/or equipment repairs as required.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education, Training and Experience:

  • Completion of Grade 12.
  • Completion of recognized Recreational courses such as Handi crafts plus two years recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • A valid class 4 vehicle license [unrestricted].
  • Food Safe Level 1, Emergency First Aid and CPR.
  • Ability and willingness to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check screening.

Required Skills/Knowledge:

  • Must be able to speak and write English competently, and to understand written and oral instructions.

  • Ability to deal with others effectively.

  • Ability to organize work and implement a plan of care.

  • Ability to operate related equipment.

  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.

  • Physical: Physical ability to carry out all the duties require of an Activity Aide ( example — pushing carts, setting up equipment like bowling, or bingo etc.).

Successful candidates, prior to hiring, may be required to provide:

  • Background check consent.

  • A clear vulnerable sector screening.

  • Violence Prevention —8 modules on Learning Hub.

  • Three professional references.

  • Completion of our online Praesidium Abuse Training and required Health and Safety training.

Compensation:

The target hiring range for this position is $31.64 to $31.64 with a maximum of $31.64.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
