Community Health & Wellness Nurse, R.N. (Part-Time)

We currently have an opportunity for a Permanent Part-Time Community Health & Wellness Nurse (RN) working four (4) days per month. Reporting directly to the Health Manager, the Community Health & Wellness Nurse is a vital member of the Health Centre leadership team, responsible for managing, planning, delivering, and evaluating a comprehensive range of core nursing functions across public health, primary care, communicable disease management, pediatric immunizations, and Home and Community Care.

Operating in strict alignment with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) scope of practice, Indigenous Services Canada (ISC Health) nursing guidelines, Alberta Health Services (AHS) protocols, and Nation priorities, the Nurse provides clinical leadership, critical thinking, evidence-informed intervention, and direct clinical supervision to nursing and healthcare aide staff. The Nurse performs specialized clinical duties reserved exclusively for Registered Nurses—including initial Inter-RAI Home Care Assessments and 0–5 infant/child inoculations—while embedding Cree cultural values, land-based traditions, and primary healthcare principles across all client care, EMR charting, and disease prevention strategies.

Principle Duties & Responsibilities

Include but are not limited to:

• Leading, planning, executing, and evaluating community health, primary care, communicable disease control, and Home and Community Care programs in compliance with professional nursing practice standards.
• Performing specialized RN-exclusive clinical procedures, including initial Inter-RAI Home Care Assessments, pediatric immunizations (0–5 years), complex wound care, and clinical diagnoses.
• Applying primary healthcare principles across the lifespan, focusing on health promotion, disease/injury prevention, population health protection, chronic disease self-management, curative care, urgent/emergent triage, rehabilitation, and palliative care.
• Directing community communicable disease surveillance, outbreak management, contact tracing, and public health protection strategies in alignment with the Public Health Act.
• Translating complex medical information and care plans into simple, culturally respectful concepts for clients and families, overcoming language barriers while honoring community values and sensitivities.
• Incorporating traditional Cree healing practices, local cultural perspectives, and land-based wellness approaches alongside Western primary clinical care.
• Providing direct clinical supervision, assignment of duties, work schedules, mentoring, and quality assurance evaluations for Registered Nurses, LPNs, Health Care Aides, Comfort Care Aides, and administrative staff.
• Analyzing and applying population health data from clinical databases (e.g., CHIP, CARE, Inter-RAI, Netcare, Connect Care, electronic medical eFiles) to make evidence-informed care decisions and establish program priorities.
• Maintaining accurate, secure, and timely clinical EMR progress charting, immunization registries, and home care encounter records for all clients while enforcing strict compliance with OCAP® principles and KFN privacy policies.
• Managing the custody, inventory, re-stocking, sterilization, and safe disposal of medical supplies, pharmaceuticals, vaccines, controlled substances, and hazardous biomedical waste.

Knowledge & Skills Required

Include but are not limited to:

• Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.Sc.N.) is strongly preferred; Diploma in Nursing considered with equivalent clinical experience.
• Active, unrestricted registration in good standing with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) is mandatory.
• Mandatory Clinical Certifications: CPR Level C / AED / Standard First Aid, Inoculant Certification (Indigenous Services Canada / ISC Health), Inter-RAI Home Care Assessment Certification, and Community-Based Naloxone and Narcan Certification.
• Minimum of three (3) years of progressive experience in Public Health / Community Health Nursing is preferred (or 5 years of acute care experience).
• Demonstrated clinical experience in Home and Community Care nursing, pediatric care, and communicable disease management.
• Demonstrated fluency in electronic clinical databases and EMR management tools (e.g., CHIP, CARE, Inter-RAI, Netcare).
• Strong understanding of Cree culture, traditions, First Nations governance, and social determinants of health impacting Indigenous communities.
• Schedule & Conditions: Permanent Part-Time commitment (4 days per month). Mandatory requirements include complete immunization record, clear Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search (dated within 3 months), clear Child Welfare Check, signed Oath of Confidentiality under the KFN "Access to Information & Privacy Management" policy and Financial Administration Code, ability to pass drug testing and be fit for duty, physical capacity to perform clinical lifting/maneuvers, valid Driver's License (Class 5 required) with clean abstract, and access to a reliable vehicle.
