What We Need:
The Director, Research, Academic and Medical Affairs provides strategic and operational leadership for Oak Valley Health’s Research, Academic and Medical Affairs portfolios. The Director is responsible for advancing research innovation, academic excellence and physician engagement, while ensuring compliance with applicable legislation, regulatory requirements, hospital by-laws, and organizational policies.
Working collaboratively with physicians, researchers, medical staff leaders, executives, program leaders, learners and external academic and health system partners, the Director fosters an environment that supports clinical research, medical education, scholarly activity and medical staff management. The role is instrumental in expanding Oak Valley Health’s expanding research capacity, strengthening our academic plan, and advancing organizational strategic priorities. A major priority will be working on the York University Medical School Partnership.
This key leadership position partners with and reports to the Chief of Staff and the Vice President, Medical Operations. The position also partners with the Vice-President & Chief Financial Officer for medical affairs administrative and operational matters.
Key Responsibilities:
Research
- Provide strategic leadership for the hospital’s research office, supporting the growth of clinical research, innovation and scholarly activity.
- Oversee research governance, policies and regulatory compliance, including collaboration with the Research Ethics Board (REB) to ensure the ethical conduct of research involving human participants.
- Partner with physician investigators, scientists, research staff and external organizations to strengthen research capacity and develop collaborative research initiatives.
- Support the development and implementation of the organization’s research strategy, including opportunities to enhance research infrastructure, funding and academic output.
- Promote evidence-informed practice, innovation and knowledge translation to improve patient outcomes and healthcare delivery.
- Monitor research performance indicators and ensure compliance with institutional, provincial and national research standards.
Academic Affairs
- Lead the organization’s medial academic affairs strategy in partnership with affiliated universities, colleges and educational institutions.
- Be the primary liaison with York University for their new Medical School, ensuring alignment of medical academic priorities, expectations, and deliverables.
- Oversee physician and learner education programs, ensuring high-quality learning experiences for medical students, residents, fellows and other health profession learners.
- Foster a culture of teaching excellence by supporting physician educators, medical academic appointments, faculty development and continuing professional development initiatives.
- Develop and strengthen medical academic partnerships that advance education, innovation and interprofessional learning.
- Support accreditation requirements related to undergraduate and postgraduate medical education.
- Promote scholarship, knowledge translation and continuous learning throughout the organization.
Medical Affairs
- Provide strategic leadership for all aspects of the medical staff, including physician resource planning, recruitment, credentialing, onboarding, reappointment, medical staff reviews and offboarding.
- Lead medical staff governance and physician engagement initiatives that foster a high-performing and collaborative medical staff.
- Provide administrative leadership and support to the Medical Advisory Committee (MAC), Chiefs of Department and Medical Directors and other medical staff committees as needed.
- Oversee physician remuneration programs including stipend administration, on-call funding and other physician payment models.
- Partner with senior and medical leaders to support physician performance management, quality improvement initiatives and the management of complex practice matters.
- Ensure compliance with hospital by-laws, professional staff rules, legislation, accreditation standards and regulatory requirements.
- Provide strategic advice to senior leadership on matters impacting physician practice, recruitment, governance and organizational priorities.
What you bring to the role:
- Demonstrated leadership experience overseeing Research, Academic and Medical Affairs within a complex healthcare environment.
- Knowledge of clinical research administration, research governance, Research Ethics Boards (REB) and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Experience supporting medical academic affiliations, learner programs and physician education.
- In-depth understanding of hospital governance, medical staff by-laws, credentialing, physician engagement and professional practice.
- Proven ability to build strong partnerships with physicians, researchers, executives, academic institutions and healthcare organizations.
- Demonstrated ability to manage complex and sensitive professional matters with discretion, diplomacy and sound judgment.
- Excellent communication, organizational, leadership and strategic planning skills.
- Strong financial management, budgeting and resource planning experience.
- Knowledge of quality improvement, patient safety, risk management and professional practice standards.
- Commitment to fostering an inclusive, respectful and psychologically safe workplace aligned with Oak Valley Health’s values.
Qualification:
- Undergraduate degree in Health Administration, Business Administration or a related field required.
- Master’s degree in Health Administration, Business Administration or a related discipline preferred.
- Progressive leadership experience in Medical Affairs, Academic Affairs and/or Research administration within a hospital or academic healthcare environment.
- Demonstrated knowledge of Ontario healthcare legislation, medical staff governance, hospital operations and research regulations.
Work Schedule:
This leadership position provides oversight across the Research, Academic and Medical Affairs portfolios. Responsibilities and time allocation will be determined based on organizational priorities, strategic initiatives and operational requirements.
Operational requirements may require flexibility outside of regular business hours to attend meetings and support organizational priorities.
