Location - This role is in-person at North Campus, Edmonton.
Position Summary
The Department of Chemistry at the University of Alberta provides an outstanding environment for studies in chemistry, is among the most research-active departments in Canada, and is regarded as being among the top three in the country. The department is one of the best equipped and best funded in North America and has a faculty renowned internationally for its excellence in teaching and research.
The Faculty of Science is internationally recognized for excellence in research and education. Through pioneering discovery and innovation, the faculty addresses global challenges across disciplines such as biology, chemistry, computing science, physics, mathematics, and earth sciences. Its work positions the university at the forefront of technological, environmental, and scientific advancement.
Reporting to the Chemistry Stores Supervisor, the primary focus of the Chemistry Stores Chemical Technician is to support the day-to-day operations of the Chemistry Undergraduate Teaching Storeroom. This involves, but is not limited to, preparing chemical samples, reagents, and supplies for the teaching labs and servicing the Chemistry department Storeroom window/counter on the first or second floors of the Chemistry building.
- Prepare chemical solutions, samples, and lab supplies from common stores' inventories for use by students in laboratory courses and practical examinations
- Interpret, test run, and analyze new or modified experiments from course lab manuals in consultation with Lab Coordinator(s) and provide feedback to optimize or highlight potential issues with experiment inputs and procedures
- Assist Lab Coordinators with initializing and testing lab apparatuses and small equipment, such as infrared spectrometers, pH meters, voltmeters, spectrophotometers, and other instruments as needed
- Attend to the Teaching Storeroom service window and provide undergraduate students and GTAs with requested supplies, chemicals, and glassware
- Sell course lab manuals, notebooks, office supplies, learning aids, and personal protective equipment (e.g., lab coat and safety glasses) to approximately 10,000 undergraduate students every year
- Create and place orders using the appropriate purchasing method, and ensure orders are accurate and compliant with institutional policies and procedures
- Remove chemical and hazardous waste from the teaching labs and safely transport it to the Chemistry building’s central waste collection area for pick-up by the University’s Health, Safety, & Environment (HSE) unit
- Encourage and promote a safe work culture with a positive attitude and team approach
- Provide coverage at various store locations during employee vacations and sick leave to ensure consistent operations and customer service
- A diploma in Chemistry or a related field of study is required; a background in Organic Chemistry preferred
- 2 years of relevant work experience in a laboratory setting is essential; equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered
- Strong and broad-based computer skills, especially proficient with Google applications and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software applications to manage inventory and purchase supplies
- Chemical Safety Training, Hazardous Waste Management, or Workplace Hazardous Materials Information Systems (WHMIS) Certification
- Excellent verbal and written communication, teamwork, and interpersonal skills
- Strong analytical, research, and problem-solving skills to investigate and recommend solutions for first- response-related issues like fires or chemical spills
- Experience acting independently to address day-to-day issues without direct input from the supervisor
- Effective time management and organization skills, with demonstrated ability to set priorities and meet deadlines
