Full job description
DarkVision is seeking an Ultrasound Research Scientist to join our Imaging & AI team. You will drive the scientific research and experimentation behind our next-generation imaging modes, helping transform complex ultrasound data into accurate, interpretable, and visually compelling representations. You will bridge the gap between theoretical physics and real-world application, designing innovative imaging concepts that solve complex industrial problems.
DarkVision's technology relies on advanced ultrasound physics to detect sub-millimetric defects across massive assets. You will focus on the full lifecycle of innovation-from theoretical validation and simulation to experimental verification and real-world validation-ensuring that our beamforming, signal processing, and visualization approaches push the boundaries of what is possible in Non-Destructive Testing (NDT).
This role is fully on-site at our North Vancouver, BC HQ, where employees enjoy a wide array of amenities including a fully equipped gym, squash court, steam room, climbing wall, and more!
Our Team
We're building the next generation of ultrasound technology. With highly dense 2D arrays and an in-house silicon chip, our third generation of technology brings unlimited imaging modalities, omni-shear imaging, and 3D volumetric reconstructions to your fingertips.
https://darkvisiontech.com/applications/future-of-ultrasound/
Working in the Imaging & AI team, you will join a multidisciplinary group of experts in physics, software, and machine learning. This team is responsible for early-stage ideation, research, experimentation, and development. You will collaborate closely with software engineers and ML scientists to integrate your beamforming and signal processing algorithms into our core products.
What You Will Do
- Algorithm Design: Develop advanced beamforming (e.g., FMC, TFM, PWI, PCI) and image/signal algorithms to enhance image quality, defect detection, and downstream visualization.
- Experimental Validation: Design and conduct experiments to evaluate new ideas, moving concepts from the lab to real-world verification.
- Simulation & Modeling: Utilize simulation software and theoretical models to validate imaging concepts before hardware implementation.
- Innovation Lifecycle: Manage the research process from ideation to development, ensuring that scientific concepts are pragmatically translated into robust industrial solutions.
Who You Are (Basic Qualifications)
- Master's or PhD degree in Engineering Physics, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, Geophysics, or a related field.
- Solid theoretical understanding of ultrasound physics.
- Deep knowledge of ultrasound imaging techniques and beamforming algorithms (e.g., FMC, TFM, PWI, PCI).
- Strong proficiency in Python and/or MATLAB.
- Hands-on experience with signal processing and image processing algorithms.
What Will Put You Ahead
- Exposure to GPU computing, CUDA/C++, scientific visualization, rendering, or high-performance image reconstruction workflows.
- Experience with programmable ultrasound research systems (e.g., Verasonics, SARUS).
- Proficiency with industrial ultrasound simulation software (e.g., CIVA, K-Wave).
- Familiarity with commercial NDT scanners (e.g., Olympus Omniscan).
- Experience in Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) and NDT Ultrasonic certifications.
- A relevant portfolio of past projects and peer-reviewed publications in the field of ultrasound imaging.
- Deep knowledge in full-waveform inversion, tomography and other nonlinear inverse methods.
- Pragmatic mindset with a desire to work in a fast-paced technology environment.
