Full job description
YWCA NWT is hiring a Y-Space Program Coordinator to join our team! Reporting to the Youth Programs Team Lead, this role will involve creating and implementing gender inclusive programs for high school-aged youth (grades 9-12) focused on life skills, employability skills, leadership skills, social awareness and civic engagement, self advocacy, and other activities.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Program Management
1. Researches and develops programs and materials for groups and program participants.
2. Liaises with other community agencies to promote program(s) and identify needs and coordinates the provision of program/services
3. Ensures programs operate according to legislation, regulations, standards, policies and procedures established by government and YWCA NWT.
4. Provides input into program structure and development and policies.
5. Ensures program participants understand and adhere to program rules and responsibilities.
6. Implements emergency/incidental behavioral interventions, including utilizing Non-Violent Crisis Intervention training.
Life Skills
7. Role models, encourages and assists clients to practice self help and nonviolent problem solving skills daily.
8. Develops and facilitates workshops and training sessions such as employability skills training, volunteer opportunities and confidence boosting skills in non-judgemental settings.
9. Ensures experiences, materials and resources that actively promote learning, especially non-violent, anti-racist and non-sexist interactions and attitudes.
10. Mentors and supports program participants in volunteer or work placements obtained during program participation.
11. Teaches life skills on an informational support in areas such as cooking, healthy living, safety, money management, problem solving strategies, etc.
12. Provides programming and support designed to enhance the life skills of program participants.
13. Assists clients in assessing their interests, knowledge and skills for education and/or work related activities.
14. Assists clients to prepare letters and resumes.
15. Provides opportunities for clients to share and learn from one another.
16. Promotes independent problem solving and decision making skills.
17. Provides advocacy services and/or teaches self advocacy for program participants.
18. Provides follow up intervention as necessary (phone, in person groups).
Administration
19. Manages intakes, social media posts and communication with program participants and their families.
20. Ensures client files are appropriately maintained and secured.
21. Plans and implements youth led events including recreational activities.
22. Sets program hours of operation within parameters determined by supervisor and/or consultation with school personnel to meet need of clients and/or client demographics.
23. Keeps up to date regarding skills, techniques, current initiatives, etc.
24. Participates in short and long-term program planning with Supervisor.
25. Works with Supervisor to research and apply for more funding, including creating new programming that meets funding criteria.
26. Attends regular team meetings and training sessions to contribute to the identification and resolution of trends or issues that will affect the program and to support funding agency requirements.
Program Operations
27. Collaborates with school personnel, local businesses and community partners to provide leadership and volunteer opportunities for program participants.
28. Implements a daily schedule that incorporates client needs.
Health, Safety & Security
29. Ensures the program safety policies are followed at all times and maintains safe practices while working including having a clear escape plan if needed.
30. Review all program participant's information packages to be aware of allergies, health concerns or disabilities.
31. Ensures adequate health and safety measures are in place and appropriate to respond to emergencies, medical needs and safety needs of clients.
32. Follows safety measures and provides appropriate responses to emergencies and confrontations using non-violent crisis intervention training.
33. Responds to injury using first aid training and agency policy.
34. Ensures first aid kits and program phones are brought along to outside activities.
35. Reports all incidents of suspected abuse to supervisor and follows YWCA NWT protocols.
36. Reports all accidents, injuries and illnesses to the supervisor and completes incident report.
37. Releases children in program only to authorized persons.
38. Ensures that the safety, cleanliness and tidiness of the program site is maintained.
SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE
- Diploma in Social Work or Human Sciences, child and youth Studies with at least two years experience in related field or equivalent in education and experience.
- Ability to effectively engage youth in discussions and groups around the impact of a variety of social issues.
- Knowledge of current trends and interest in media, video games as it relates to children and youth.
- Experience interacting with children and youth.
- Ability to implement planned activities and programs.
- Knowledge of and ability to work with persons of varying cultural backgrounds.
- Experience working closely with and in collaboration with community partners leading in collaborative solutions to problems.
- Experience working with behaviour management issues.
- Formal training in non violent crisis intervention.
- Good judgement and decision making skills.
- Ability to respond effectively in managing behavioural issues and crisis situations in a stressful environment.
- Ability to work both independently, with minimal supervision and collaboratively, in a team setting.
- Ability to multi-task and good time management skills.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Good record keeping skills and attention to detail.
- Knowledge and understanding of school and programming expectations.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Suite and adept at using data entry software including cloud storage systems is considered an asset.
- Must provide a clean Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check for employment offer to be valid.
- Updated immunization records.
- Current First Aid/CPR certification.
- Experience facilitating groups.
- Strong networking and relationship building skills.
OTHER
- Performs other tasks as assigned by the Supervisor based on operational requirements.
- Complies with YWCA NWT policies and procedures.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Will generally work Monday to Friday, but will also work flexible hours, including occasional evenings and weekends to support programming and events.
