Medical Director (Responsible Medical Practitioner - Nurse Practitioner)
Reports To
Director / Executive Leadership
Position Summary
The Medical Director (Responsible Medical Practitioner - RMP) is responsible for the clinical oversight, governance, and delivery of all medical care provided to participants at iRecover Alberta across the full continuum of care, including:
- Medically supported detoxification
- Residential addiction treatment programming
- Ongoing medical and mental health care needs throughout admission until discharge
The Medical Director ensures that all services are delivered in a safe, evidence-based, and compliant manner in accordance with applicable legislation and standards, including:
- Mental Health Services Protection Act (MHSPA)
- Mental Health Services Protection Regulation (MHSPR)
- Residential Addiction Treatment Service Standards (RATSS)
- Health Information Act (HIA)
- Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIP)
- Health Professions Act (HPA)
- College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) standards
This role combines direct clinical care, medical leadership, and system level accountability for medical services, documentation, staff performance, and quality outcomes.
This is a hybrid position, requiring:
- Minimum one (1) full day per week onsite at iRecover in Tees, Alberta.
- Ongoing remote oversight and 24/7 on-call availability
Core Responsibilities
Medical Oversight & Clinical Governance
- Provide ongoing, documented medical oversight for all participants across detox and residential programming
- Act as the primary authority for medical decision making, protocols, and standards of care
- Ensure all care is clinically appropriate, authorized, and compliant with legislations
- Maintain accountability for clinical safety, medical decision making, and regulatory compliance
Clinical Care & Prescribing (NP Scope)
- Assess, diagnose, and treat substance use and co-occurring disorders
- Prescribe and manage:
- Detox protocols
- Opioid Agonist Therapy (OAT)
- Mental health and general medical medications
- Authorize treatment plans, medication orders, and monitoring protocols
- Practice within Nurse Practitioner scope under CRNA standards and provincial legislation
Nursing Leadership & Clinical Supervision
- Provide clinical leadership and oversight of nursing staff (LPNs)
- Establish and reinforce standards of nursing practice, documentation, and clinical decision making
- Review and validate:
- Withdrawal assessments (CIWA-Ar, COWS)
- Nursing documentation
- Medication administration practices
- Identify performance gaps and provide coaching, clinical guidance, and escalation to leadership when required
- Support development of a high functioning, accountable nursing team
Onboarding, Training & Clinical Education
- Lead and support onboarding of nursing staff and regulated health professionals, including:
- Medical protocols
- Documentation standards
- Escalation pathways
- Withdrawal management processes
- Develop, implement, and maintain ongoing clinical training programs for nursing and clinical staff
- Provide regular education sessions and clinical updates, including:
- Medication management and prescribing practices
- Withdrawal management (CIWA-Ar, COWS)
- Documentation and audit expectations
- Emerging best practices in addiction medicine
- Ensure training aligns with organizational policies, legislation, and professional standards
- Participate in competency assessments, training reviews, and retraining following audits or incidents
- Identify training needs through audits, incident reviews, and staff performance
Documentation & Medical Record Accountability
- Enter, review, and authenticate medical documentation in EMR and paper records
- Ensure all clinical decisions, orders, and oversight activities are clearly documented
- Review and reconcile verbal, virtual, and electronic orders
- Ensure compliance with HIA, FOIP, and organizational documentation standards
Chart Reviews, Audits & Quality Assurance
- Conduct:
- Weekly chart reviews during active detox cases
- Monthly formal chart audits across the program
- Evaluate:
- Documentation accuracy and completeness
- Medication authorization and prescribing practices
- Clinical appropriateness and adherence to protocols
- Provide feedback, corrective action plans, and follow-up monitoring
Incident Review & Risk Management
- Participate in review of critical incidents, adverse events, and medication errors
- Provide clinical leadership in root cause analysis, risk mitigation, and policy improvement
Availability, On-Call & Escalation
- Maintain 24/7 on-call availability for clinical consultation
- Support staff with clinical deterioration, medication/medical concerns, and emergency situations
- Provide direction for escalation to EMS or hospital care
Interdisciplinary Collaboration
- Collaborate with:
- Director and leadership team
- Clinical supervisors and program staff
- External physicians, psychiatrists, and allied providers
- Participate in case reviews, care planning, and continuity of care coordination
Leadership Collaboration & Program Development
- Act as a key medical advisor to executive leadership
- Collaborate to improve service delivery, manage clinical risk, and support program growth
- Contribute to policy development, accreditation readiness, and continuous quality improvement
Qualifications
- Licensed Nurse Practitioner in Alberta (CRNA) in good standing
- Authorized prescriber under provincial legislation
- Experience in addiction medicine and withdrawal management required
- Experience in:
- Clinical leadership or supervision
- Residential or community addiction treatment
- Quality assurance and chart audits
- Strong knowledge of:
- MHSPA / MHSPR
- RATSS standards
- HIA / FOIP
- Health Professions Act
Work Structure
- Hybrid (remote + onsite)
- Minimum 1 day/week onsite, Tees, Alberta
- 24/7 on-call availability required
