Position Summary
Strait Marine Services provides marine services with a focus on delivering adaptive and experienced Tugboat solutions that drive our customers' success. Our operations prioritize customer service, safety, quality, and environmental respect.
The Tug Deckhand plays a crucial role in the operation and maintenance of marine vessels. This physically demanding position involves assisting with the docking and undocking of vessels, as well as handling deck lines, wires, and towing equipment for both the tug and other vessels.
Crews works a 2-week on / 2-week off rotation, 12-hours per day. Crew live aboard the vessel during their 2-weeks on and are expected to be available at varying hours to manage operational needs.
Major Accountabilities
- Perform all functions safely when complying with applicable rules, procedures and policies.
- Adheres to company policies and standard operating procedures.
- Handles deck lines, wires, and towing tackle for both the tug and vessel.
- Ensures the berthing of tugs and vessels using lines.
- Maintains cleanliness of the deck. Performs cleaning, polishing, chipping, painting and planned maintenance work in relation to tug & tug dock.
- Supports cargo loading/unloading.
- Performs fire and security rounds and maintain gangway watch while in port.
- Adjusts the gangway and sees to the safe transfer of persons.
- Identifies, assesses and reports all risks, hazards and incidents to the Tug Master.
- Performs other duties as required.
Education and Experience Requirements
- Marine Emergency Duties (MED STCW Basic Safety) certification
- Transport Canada Marine Medical (for Canadian marine jobs).
- A minimum of 2 years of related experience is preferred.
- Radio Operator certification an asset.
- Bridge Watch Rating certification an asset.
- Strong teamwork and communication skills and ability to effectively live and work with crewmates onboard vessel for 2 weeks at a time.
- Strong organizational, time management, and multitasking skills, with the ability to work independently.
- Ability to work in confined spaces and handle heavy equipment.
Skills and Knowledge Requirements
- Comprehensive understanding of the operation and use of all emergency equipment on board a marine vessel, with a focus on the location and use of firefighting, lifesaving, man overboard, and safety apparatus.
- Familiarity with responsibilities under the Canada Labour Code (CLC) and Marine Occupational Health and Safety (MOHS) Regulations.
- Thorough understanding of all emergency equipment and duties associated with a deckhand position onboard a marine vessel.
- Awareness of hazards associated with daily activities that are typical of a deckhand onboard a marine vessel
Physical Demands

The employee must be physically prepared to work in outdoor environments in all weather conditions. Must be able to wear PPE including safety boots, personal flotation device, SCBA mask, and fire-fighting attire.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk, sit, talk and hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, night vision, and ability to adjust focus.
The employee may be required to:
- Stand; use hands to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; and climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
- Crawl into and work in small and confined spaces.
- Lift up to 50 lbs or drag and/or move up to 100 lbs.
- Maintain balance and coordination while navigating the vessel, especially in rough seas.
