Full job description

Marine Navigation Simulator Instructor

Schedule: Flexible hours required; working days are typically 8 to 10 hours, depending on the course.

Western Maritime Institute (WMI), the largest private marine training institution in Canada and the largest Transport Canada certified marine training provider on the West Coast, is seeking qualified Marine Navigation Simulator Instructors for our Ladysmith and Surrey campuses.

The successful candidate will teach Simulated Electronic Navigation (SEN) courses, ECDIS and related navigation subjects. Training is delivered using a modern Wärtsilä/Transas nautical simulator approved by DNV and Transport Canada.

Key Requirements:

  • Legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Fluent in English, including strong oral, written, and reading communication skills
  • Valid Transport Canada Certificate of Competency
  • Minimum Chief Mate CoC required, Master Near Coastal or higher preferred
  • Experience as an Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch; command experience preferred
  • Teaching qualification or experience in course and curriculum development. Course instructors must hold teaching qualifications incorporating training in instructional techniques, educational technology and evaluation methods. These qualifications may be obtained in the following ways:
  • Through a federal government department in Canada, or an overseas government which operates a recognized teacher training program;
  • Through a provincially accredited post-secondary institution in Canada;
  • Through a firm in Canada recognized by a provincial government or by the federal government, and which is engaged in providing education and training or educational technology consulting services. i.e. Instructor Development Program (IDP) Level 1 and 2.
  • Strong knowledge of chartwork, electronic navigation, bridge watchkeeping, radar, GPS, ECDIS, bridge procedures, and electronic position fixing
  • Knowledge of the Canada Shipping Act, related regulations, SOLAS, MARPOL, and STCW
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, problem-solving, and time-management skills
  • Computer skills, including Microsoft Office, considered an asset
