The Indigenous Health Lead will help Lakeridge Health improve care for Indigenous patients, families, and communities, as per the guidance of the Indigenous Health Plan, which was co-designed with an Indigenous Expert Committee and Lakeridge Hospital leadership and is grounded in the Seven Grandfather Teachings. The Indigenous Health Plan is intended to be a living strategy that evolves in response to community priorities.
Using a combination of personal lived experience, work experience and strong relationship skills, this person will help put the Indigenous Health Plan into action. They will work with Indigenous Elders, Traditional Knowledge Keepers, community leaders, hospital leaders, staff, and other health equity team members to gain insight and share insights for meaningful change.
The goal is to make care more culturally safe, respectful, compassionate, and fair.

The Indigenous Health Lead will:
- Help create and deliver programs that improves care for Indigenous patients and communities and aligns with both the Indigenous Health Plan and Lakeridge Health Strategic Plan. Success will depend on building strong relationships with Indigenous Elders, Traditional Knowledge Keepers, leaders, and community partners as well as engaging a wide range of internal resources such as data support, strategy, quality, and organizational development teams to turn evidence into effective programs.
- Help set up an Indigenous Health Guiding Committee in the first year.
- Advise hospital leaders and teams on Indigenous health, health equity, racism, and culturally safe care.
- Support teams in including Indigenous health and equity in planning, programs, and evaluation. This will include the use of equity tools, policies, and best practices developed by and/or valued by Indigenous communities.
- Work closely with the Chief and Medical Director of Health Equity and Population Health, the Black Health Lead, and the IDEAA team.
- Connect with people in similar roles - Indigenous Health Leads at other hospitals, public health units, and partner organizations, who can provide peer support.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- The ideal candidate has community experience and post-secondary education (e.g. master's degree in public health, health promotion, epidemiology, or a related field.)
- Minimum of 2 years of community experience working in Indigenous communities. Key areas of interest are Indigenous health or working in Indigenous-serving organizations.
- Lived experience, including cultural knowledge and an understanding of Indigenous world views
- Experience planning, running, or evaluating programs.
- Experience building partnerships with community groups, leaders, and organizations.
- Strong facilitation, listening, and relationship-building skills.
- Strong understanding of Indigenous health, health equity, and the impact of racism in health care.
- Strong writing and speaking skills.
- Ability to write reports, briefing notes, and clear updates.
- Strong project management skills.
- Ability to manage several tasks and meet deadlines.
- Honesty, humility, and integrity.
- Comfort using email, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, the internet, and other common computer tools.
- Clinical experience is not required. Experience in health care or public health is an asset.

- Demonstrated understanding of a commitment to Lakeridge Health's comprehensive safety programs and practices including staff, patient and environmental safety and participation in regular in-services in this area
