Overnight Laboratory Assistant – Sample Receiving, Data Entry & Customer Support

To apply, please submit a Resume AND Cover Letter explaining why you are well suited for this position.

Location: Vancouver, BC
Shift: Permanent Overnight Shift (Approximately 11:00 PM – 7:00 AM)
Education: Bachelor of Science (BSc) required

About the Role

We are seeking a reliable, detail-oriented, and highly independent individual to join our team as an Overnight Laboratory Assistant.

This position is ideal for someone who genuinely enjoys working independently in a quiet environment. The overnight shift has very few staff present, and much of the work is performed alone with minimal supervision.

The role combines laboratory sample receiving, routine data entry, administrative processing, and customer email support. It is best suited for someone who is organized, dependable, focused, and comfortable performing routine tasks accurately and consistently throughout the night.

Please note: This is an independent overnight position. Candidates who prefer constant interaction with coworkers are not suitable for this position.

Responsibilities

  • Receive and accession laboratory samples
  • Verify sample information and documentation
  • Perform accurate data entry and data verification
  • Monitor and manage incoming customer emails
  • Respond professionally and clearly to customer inquiries
  • Prioritize multiple tasks while maintaining accuracy
  • Work independently with minimal supervision throughout the shift

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree or higher
  • Excellent written English communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Typing speed of at least 60 words per minute
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and other standard office software
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills
  • Ability to multitask effectively
  • Ability to work independently and stay productive without direct supervision
  • Reliable, mature, and professional work habits

Employment Stability Requirement

We are seeking someone interested in a long-term position.

Preference will be given to candidates who have demonstrated employment stability, including having held at least one position for three or more consecutive years with the same employer.

This Position Is Likely a Good Fit If You:

  • Prefer working nights rather than days
  • Enjoy working independently
  • Like quiet, low-distraction work environments
  • Take pride in accuracy and attention to detail
  • Are dependable and consistently punctual
  • Are comfortable making decisions and solving routine problems on your own
  • Can remain focused and productive while working alone

This Position Is Probably Not a Good Fit If You:

  • Prefer working in a highly social environment
  • Require frequent supervision or direction
  • Become bored easily with routine or repetitive tasks
  • Are not comfortable working overnight hours

To apply, please submit:

  • Resume

In your cover letter, please answer the following questions:

  • Are you specifically seeking permanent overnight employment (11:00 PM – 7:00 AM)?
  • Have you previously worked overnight shifts?
  • Do you have a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree or higher?
  • What is your approximate typing speed (WPM)?
  • What is the longest period you have worked for a single employer?
  • This position involves working largely alone overnight with minimal supervision. Do you consider this a positive aspect of the role? Please explain.
