Genome Sciences Technologist
Genome Sciences Centre
Vancouver, BC
The Genome Sciences Technologist (GST) performs various molecular biology laboratory techniques and procedures using laboratory robots, including biospecimen procurement, sample handling and quality control, diverse library construction and high throughput sequencing methods, in a large-scale Genomics production facility. The GST assists in the development and/or implementation of new methods, materials, procedures, instruments and techniques and provides assistance to specific research projects or programs.
What you’ll do
  • Perform genomics laboratory research assistance related to specific projects or programs in accordance with controlled laboratory procedures. This includes performing tasks such as biospecimen receipt and quality check, laboratory information management system (LIMS) data entry, RNA and DNA purification, cDNA synthesis, genome and transcriptome next generation library construction and sequencing, Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) experiments, and agarose gel electrophoresis.
  • Assist in the development and/or implementation of new methods, materials, procedures, instruments, and techniques (collectively termed ‘Technology Development’) by providing feedback to supervisors following protocol assessments. Contributes to the development of guidelines, standard operating procedures and transfer of new technology procedures being implemented by the production platform.
  • Record and report test results in laboratory software and summarizes results to supervisors and escalates concerns as required.
  • Prepare solutions following standard operating procedures.
  • Process patient samples according to established procedures for clinical sequencing diagnostic tests.
  • Maintain general lab and equipment cleanliness. Recognize and report malfunctions in equipment to the Assistant Production Coordinator.
  • Work within a regulated quality management system by performing tasks such as completing training according to accreditation requirements and sending required training records and documentation specifying corrective and preventative actions (CA/PA) to the Quality Assurance team in accordance with Quality Management Systems policies.
  • Provide orientation, collegial information and/or demonstration of equipment, work methods and processes to others, including other technologists and new staff as required.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
What you bring
Qualifications:
  • Graduation from a recognized diploma program in Biotechnology, Microbiology or Biochemistry and two (2) years’ of recent related experience in a research laboratory or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience acceptable to the Genome Sciences Centre Group Leaders and Production Coordinators.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the historic and ongoing impacts of settler colonialism on Indigenous Peoples in social and health contexts, including supported by significant knowledge of Indigenous-specific mandates, including clear understanding of and commitment to eradicate Indigenous-specific racism and discrimination and embed Indigenous Cultural Safety and Humility.Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of the historic and ongoing impacts of settler colonialism and systemic racism on Indigenous Peoples within social and health contexts. This includes understanding how these factors contribute to current health disparities and barriers to care. Show a clear commitment to identifying, challenging, and eradicating Indigenous-specific racism and all forms of discrimination impacting equity-deserving groups within health care settings. This involves familiarity and understanding Indigenous Cultural Safety and Humility recognizing personal biases, institutional barriers, engaging in anti-racism education and training and advocating for systemic change.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of legislative obligations and provincial commitments within BC Cancer's contexts found in the foundational documents including Truth & Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action (2015), In Plain Sight (2020), BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019), United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), Reclaiming Power and Place Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls Calls for Justice (2019), the Declaration Act Action Plan and Remembering Keegan: A First Nations Case Study - BC Human Rights Code, BC Anti-racism Act and how they intersect across the health care system.

Foster trust through respectful communication, active listening, and honoring equity-deserving people's perspectives on health and wellness. Commit to ongoing education and training on Indigenous health issues, cultural safety, and DEI principles. Participate in workshops, cultural immersion experiences, and continuous professional development to stay informed and responsive to equity-deserving groups. Provide patient-centred care that respects Indigenous ways of knowing and healing, respects BIPOC experiences and world views ensuring that care plans are culturally relevant and holistic.
  • Knowledge of social, economic, political and historical realities of settler colonialism on Indigenous Peoples and familiarity with addressing Indigenous-specific anti-racism, anti-racism and Indigenous Cultural Safety and foundational documents and legislative commitments (The Declaration Act, the Declaration Action Plan, TRC, IPS, Remembering Keegan, etc.).
You have:
  • Knowledge of molecular biology techniques particularly DNA and RNA preparation and manipulation.
  • Demonstrate ability to perform detailed procedures reproducibly and accurately.
  • Demonstrate interpersonal skills including the ability to work effectively with others in a team environment.
  • Ability to efficiently organize work assignments and establish priorities.
  • Knowledge and ability to use relevant computer operation systems and software.

  • Demonstrates foundational knowledge of the social, economic, and political realities of settler-colonialism and its impacts on Indigenous peoples and equity-deserving groups within social and health contexts. Understands the impact of social determinants of health-on-health outcomes.
