Quality Control Assistant

Job Overview

• WTC Group is an industry leader in specialty bulk grain handling and import/export logistics in BC and across Canada. We are seeking a Quality Control Assistant to provide coverage and support the maintenance and continuous improvement of our quality programs and processes.
• The successful candidate will assist with maintaining up-to-date training manuals, policies, certifications, and quality management systems. They will support our Certification, Standardization, Organic, and Food Handling Programs to help ensure compliance with industry regulations and applicable standards. Working closely with operations teams, management, external consultants, and clients, the Quality Control Assistant will help monitor quality initiatives, maintain documentation, coordinate training activities, and support regulatory compliance efforts.
• The ideal candidate will promote a safe and efficient work environment, demonstrate strong attention to detail, possess excellent communication skills, and work effectively with employees and cross-functional teams across multiple locations.

Job Responsibilities

• Assist with documenting and maintaining current quality practices and quality management systems, including but not limited to ISO 9001/22000, HACCP, organic handling certifications, and food safety programs.
• Helping with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) Grain Sampling Program by taking samples, mixing composite samples, weighing samples, and arranging for pick-up and delivery of samples to CFIA and other grain sample labs.
• Conduct weekly visits to our three terminal locations as required.
• Support initiatives that promote a quality-focused culture aligned with company safety, health, environmental, and food handling policies.
• Assist with updating and implementing policies and procedures for our growing automated plastics bagging operations under the guidance of senior management.
• Communicate client quality requirements and standards to operations teams and internal stakeholders.
• Follow up with operations personnel regarding quality-related issues, corrective actions, training requirements, and documentation.
• Perform inspections to verify product quality, condition, shipment accuracy, and compliance with handling, transportation, organic, and weight specifications.
• Collect, catalogue, store, and prepare samples of grains, legumes, agricultural products, and plastic resin pellets for laboratory analysis or internal review.
• Assist with monitoring compliance requirements and respond to inquiries from internal employees, clients, regulatory agencies, and service providers.
• Adhere to all yard and site safety rules, PPE requirements, company guidelines, and applicable legislation.
• Assist with quality audits, inspections, risk assessments, corrective action tracking, and quality reporting.
• Maintain records of quality incidents, non-conformances, investigations, and corrective actions.
• Support the maintenance of employee quality training records and assist with quality orientation and training activities.
• Prepare reports, collect quality data, and assist management with quality improvement initiatives.
• Perform general administrative and office duties as assigned.

Skills, Abilities, Qualifications and Certifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent is mandatory, working towards a post-secondary degree/ diploma in Quality Control or a related field is preferred.
• Ability to work independently as well as a part of different cross-functional teams.
• Full comprehension of English and the ability to review, analyze and generate a range of documentation, safety manuals and compliance reports is required.
• Previous work experience with heavy industry, grains, agricultural commodities, and organic certification requirements is ideal.
• Proficient with the use of a computer, including but not limited to the use of Microsoft Office Software (Outlook, Excel, Word, Teams, PowerPoint).
• Certification of quality control is a strong advantage (ISO 9000) as is an in-depth understanding of quality control procedures, statistical analysis, and relevant legal standards.

Work Environment and Expectations

• Yard, office and warehouse work that may include indoor and outdoor duties in various climates, temperatures and changing weather conditions.
• Noise and vibration from warehouse machinery, railroad equipment, and/or heavy trucks and transport.
• Dust and dirt that may include grain particulate as well as organic and inorganic odors.
• Sitting, standing, bending, as well as light lifting for inspections and QC checks.
• Road travel between terminals in Delta, New Westminster, and Port Coquitlam.
• Regular and acceptable attendance at such levels as determined by management.
• Available and willing to work some evenings or weekends when the needs arise to meet business needs.
