Position: Communication Intern (NOHFC)
Status: One (1) Temporary Full Time
Program: Administration
Purpose:
Reporting to the Director of Communications and Governmental Affairs, the Communications Intern supports the work of the Communications and Health Promotion Coordinators within the Communications Department. The Communications Intern helps meet the organization’s internal and external communication needs, including social media, public relations, mental health education and public education activities.
This NOHFC program requires that candidates:
· Candidate must be a new entrant into the workforce, are transitioning to a new career, or the unemployed or underemployed who are entering a new field.
· Candidate must have not previously participated in an NOHFC funded internship in the 2020 Mandate.
· Candidate must be 18 years of age or older.
· Candidate must be legally eligible to work in Canada.
· Once hired, the candidate must reside in the Northern Ontario community in which they are employed.
Education and training:
· Proof of recent successful completion of a post-secondary degree or diploma in public relations, marketing, journalism, or other relevant field
Requirements:
· A negative Police Vulnerable Sector Check
· A valid Class G driver’s license and proof of insurance
· Daily access to a reliable vehicle
· Able to lift at a minimum 20 lbs. from squatting to standing position.
· Working knowledge of (or willingness to learn) the Acts that may arise to complete the duties of the job (i.e. Ministry of Health and Long-term Care Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act and the Health Care Consent Act).
· Attending and participating in Organization and program meetings as required
· Bilingualism (English/French) is an asset
Duties:
· Strategic planning support: Collaborate with the Communications team to develop and implement communications plans that advance organizational priorities.
· Content development: Research, draft, edit, proofread and publish marketing and communications materials for target internal and external audiences, such as media releases, social media posts, website copy, brochures, posters, newsletters, articles, intranet blog posts, etc.
· Digital content production: Assist in producing multimedia content (graphics, photography, videos) to support digital campaigns and online engagement.
· Website and social media management: Update external web pages, internal employee intranet, and schedule social media content.
· Event coordination assistance: Support the planning, promotion and on-site coordination of health promotion activities, community campaigns and public events.
· Media and social monitoring: Monitor media coverage and social media channels to identify trends, emerging issues and audience sentiment; apply insights to content and engagement strategies.
· Analytics and reporting: Track key performance metrics and prepare summary reports to support continuous improvement.
· Brand management: Ensure all communications adhere to organizational brand standards, tone, voice and visual identity guidelines across all channels.
· Team collaboration: Participate in team meetings, support cross-departmental projects and contribute to communications planning and best practices.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
· Demonstrated proficiency with computer skills including Microsoft Office and in-house systems
· Strong social media management and content creation skills for Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIN, and other platforms, including analytics and strategies for increasing reach and impact
· Working knowledge of graphic design principles and software (Canva)
· Experience with WordPress website platform
· Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and independently and as part of a team
· Superior interpersonal/verbal communication skills
· Excellent research, writing, editing and proofreading abilities
· Strong problem-solving, organizational and time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines
· Participating in and/or leading workshops and seminars
· Ability to maintain confidentiality as per PHIPA (Personal Health Information Protection Act)
· Able to identify and understand key issues and overcome challenges or obstacles in a creative, organized, and strategic manner
· Strong organizational skills and self-motivation
· Effective decision making
· Effective attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy
· Sound analytical thinking, planning, prioritization, and execution skills

Selection Process:
Candidates will be selected for the position based on their skill, ability, experience, and qualifications as identified in their resume
Shift: Days (7 hours/day; Monday-Friday 8:00 am to 4:00 pm)
French Language Services Required: Bilingualism is an asset. If no bilingual candidates (both internal and external) meet the qualifications, unilingual candidates will be considered
Salary: $27.48/hour
$50,013 annually (* based on full-time hours)

This position is funded through the Northern Ontario Heritage Corporation (NOHFC). The position is a limited-term internship that is 52 weeks long.
