Full job description

Systems Administrator

Carte International Inc. is a Winnipeg-based manufacturer of distribution transformers serving utilities across North America. Our information technology function is delivered by a two-person team, and we are seeking an experienced Systems Administrator to join it.

This is a broad, hands-on generalist role. Reporting to the Director of Information Technology, the successful candidate will work across the organization's full technology environment — infrastructure, networking, security, business continuity, and end-user support — rather than within a single specialization. The position suits a self-directed professional who is comfortable working independently, exercising sound judgment on day-to-day priorities, and seeing technical work through to completion with limited oversight.

What you'll do

Infrastructure & networking

  • Administer our Windows Server domain, Active Directory, and Group Policy
  • Run our virtualization environments — Proxmox and Hyper-V — and the workloads on them
  • Configure and maintain the network: VLANs, DHCP, DNS, WiFi, routing, and switching
  • Keep IP address management and infrastructure documentation current in NetBox
  • Administer Linux servers alongside the Windows infrastructure

Security & business continuity

  • Administer backup and disaster recovery through Veeam, including regular restore testing
  • Manage endpoint protection and threat detection through SentinelOne
  • Administer Zscaler web security and Zero Trust access policies
  • Maintain Fortinet firewalls and network security appliances
  • Drive patch management and security hygiene across every system we run

Identity & access

  • Manage Microsoft Entra ID — SSO, conditional access, and policy
  • Handle user provisioning, deprovisioning, and periodic access reviews

End users & productivity

  • Support workstations across their full hardware and OS lifecycle
  • Deploy and maintain software through PDQ Deploy & Inventory
  • Administer Microsoft 365, SharePoint, and collaboration tools
  • Deliver exemplarily customer support

Automation & documentation

  • Write and maintain PowerShell to automate the work you'd rather not repeat
  • Administer Microsoft SQL Server instances and databases
  • Document configurations, procedures, and runbooks so the knowledge outlives you
  • Contribute to IT projects and cross-functional initiatives from planning through delivery

What you bring

Must have

  • 3–5+ years in systems administration or infrastructure
  • Windows Server, Active Directory, and Group Policy administration
  • Hypervisor experience — Proxmox and/or Hyper-V
  • Practical networking: VLANs, DHCP, DNS, WiFi, and basic firewall administration
  • Hands-on endpoint protection and backup/recovery experience (SentinelOne and Veeam, or equivalents)
  • Microsoft Entra ID / Azure AD administration
  • PowerShell proficiency

Nice to have

  • Manufacturing or industrial environment experience
  • Fortinet firewall administration
  • Zscaler administration
  • Linux server administration
  • Microsoft SQL Server administration
  • PDQ Deploy & Inventory

How you work

  • Self-motivated — comfortable working independently across a wide range of systems
  • A clear communicator, in writing and in person
  • Disciplined about documentation
  • Curious, and constantly picking up something new
  • Able to plan, prioritize, and finish

The practical details

  • On-site at our Winnipeg manufacturing facility
  • Off-hours availability for emergency incidents and planned maintenance windows
  • Occasional after-hours project work — upgrades, migrations, and DR testing

Join us at Carte International to be part of a vibrant team that values innovation, quality, and continuous improvement!

Benefits:

  • Casual dress
  • Company pension
  • Dental care
  • Disability insurance
  • Employee assistance program
  • Life insurance
  • On-site parking
  • Paid time off
  • Tuition reimbursement
