Full job description

About The Village Vet+ Annex

Most clinics aren't owned by vets, this one is.

Owned and operated by Dr. Michael Astin, The Village Vet+ Annex is opening a brand new, state-of-the-art animal hospital at 585 Bloor Street West in Toronto. We are looking for a Veterinary Assistant / Animal Care Attendant (VA/ACA) who will help our veterinary team provide calm, compassionate, and high-quality care to patients and their families.

About the role

You will support the veterinarians and registered veterinary technicians with patient care, treatment preparation, cleaning, patient flow, and the daily operation of a busy veterinary hospital. This role is hands-on, team-oriented, and well suited to someone who is dependable, attentive to detail, and genuinely enjoys helping animals.

What you’ll do

  • Handle and restrain dogs and cats safely and compassionately, including fearful or anxious patients, using fear-free principles
  • Monitor patients before, during, and after procedures; document observations and promptly report concerns to the clinical team
  • Prepare exam rooms, treatment areas, surgical spaces, equipment, and supplies for daily procedures
  • Support surgery, anesthesia, sterilization, and recovery workflows, including cleaning, instrument processing, and autoclave procedures
  • Assist with laboratory work, including preparing and handling specimens according to hospital protocols
  • Support radiology procedures while following PPE and safety requirements
  • Perform patient care, cleaning, laundry, waste management, and infection-control tasks to maintain a safe and hygienic hospital
  • Restock supplies, support inventory counts, and keep medications and equipment stored appropriately
  • Assist with catheters, intubation, shaving, recovery, and discharge tasks when trained and directed by the clinical team
  • Help prepare patients and families for discharge and provide practical support during busy periods
  • Maintain accurate patient records and protect client and patient confidentiality
  • Assist clients with practical questions, lift food or supply bags, and help patients and clients safely to their car when needed

What we’re looking for

  • Previous veterinary, animal-care, kennel, shelter, medical, or healthcare experience is an asset; training and new graduates are welcome to apply
  • Comfort handling dogs and cats, with a willingness to learn fear-free and low-stress techniques
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, communication, and follow-through
  • Ability to work calmly and respectfully in a fast-paced environment that can include urgent and emotionally sensitive situations
  • Willingness to perform active cleaning, laundry, sterilization, and infection-control duties
  • Comfort learning practice-management software, phones, email, and basic patient documentation
  • A warm, team-oriented, client-first approach and genuine respect for animals
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and follow WHMIS, PPE, workplace-safety, and hospital protocols
  • Physical ability to stand, bend, lift supplies, and assist with patients safely

Compensation and start date

CA$18.00–$25.00 per hour, based on relevant veterinary, animal-care, clinical, and hospital experience, demonstrated skills, training, and responsibilities. Candidates with less directly relevant experience will generally be considered toward the lower end of the range, while candidates with strong veterinary or comparable animal-care experience may be considered toward the upper end.

Target start date: November 1, 2026.

If you are excited to help build a new Toronto veterinary hospital and make a meaningful difference for patients, clients, and the team, we’d love to hear from you.

Pay: $18.00-$25.00 per hour

Work Location: In person
