About QuitNow
QuitNow is a free, evidence-informed program designed to help residents of British Columbia quit or reduce their use of tobacco and nicotine. Through a long-standing partnership between the Ministry of Health and the BC Lung Foundation, QuitNow has been providing cessation services for nearly two decades. QuitNow also provides health care providers with training and tools to effectively support their patients in transitioning away from commercial tobacco and nicotine use.
About the Role
QuitNow is seeking an experienced prescribing health care professional to serve as a QuitNow Health Care Provider Champion & Liaison on a flexible contract basis.
The Health Care Provider Champion & Liaison will support QuitNow’s health care provider education and engagement activities by leading or co-facilitating provider training sessions, joining presentations where prescribing expertise would add value, representing QuitNow at selected professional events, and providing clinical subject-matter expertise to the QuitNow team.
QuitNow will provide standardized presentation decks, speaker notes, and supporting resources. The Health Care Provider Champion & Liaison will have the flexibility to adjust pacing, emphasize relevant content, and skip optional slides based on the audience, discussion, and available time. They will provide clinical expertise to respond to participants’ questions and facilitate relevant discussions that strengthen participants’ tobacco and nicotine cessation knowledge and practice.
Training Topics
Training topics will include current tobacco, vaping, and nicotine use trends; commercial tobacco and emerging nicotine products; nicotine dependence, withdrawal, and common triggers; evidence-informed cessation pharmacotherapy, including nicotine replacement therapy, varenicline, and bupropion; Motivational Interviewing and the 5As Framework for brief interventions; and QuitNow services, referral pathways, and supports available to health care providers. The Health Care Provider Champion & Liaison should be comfortable presenting these topics and responding to clinical questions within their scope of practice.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead or co-facilitate virtual and, where mutually agreed, in-person provider training sessions for health care professionals across British Columbia.
- Deliver clinical content related to nicotine dependence, cessation, pharmacotherapy, and behavioural interventions.
- Join presentations led by QuitNow staff when a prescribing clinician’s expertise would strengthen the session.
- Facilitate discussion and respond to clinical questions from health care providers within the clinician’s scope of practice.
- Represent QuitNow at selected conferences, health care events, webinars, panels, and other professional engagement opportunities.
- Review provider-facing presentations, handouts, and other clinical education materials for accuracy and relevance.
- Provide guidance on tobacco and nicotine cessation pharmacotherapy and prescribing considerations.
- Support the QuitNow team in interpreting emerging evidence, clinical guidance, and changes related to tobacco and nicotine products.
Who You Are
- A confident and engaging presenter: you are comfortable leading discussions and presenting to interdisciplinary health care audiences.
- A skilled communicator: you can translate complex clinical information into practical, accessible guidance.
- Client-centred in your approach: you understand the importance of meeting patients where they are in their cessation journey and can represent QuitNow’s compassionate, non-judgmental approach to support nicotine and tobacco cessation.
- Evidence-informed and adaptable: you stay current with evolving clinical practice and can adjust the depth and focus of a session based on the audience.
- Collaborative and practical: you work well with multidisciplinary teams and understand how to connect evidence with real-world patient care.
Qualifications and Experience
Required
- Current registration and good standing with a regulatory college in British Columbia as a healthcare professional with prescribing authority, such as a physician, nurse practitioner, pharmacist, or other regulated prescribing clinician whose scope of practice is relevant to tobacco and nicotine cessation.
- Current or recent clinical experience supporting patients with tobacco or nicotine cessation.
- Experience prescribing or advising on nicotine replacement therapy and/or smoking cessation medications.
- Strong knowledge of nicotine dependence and evidence-informed cessation approaches.
- Experience presenting, teaching, facilitating workshops, or providing clinical education.
- Strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
- Comfortable responding to questions from interdisciplinary health care audiences.
Preferred Assets
- Specific expertise or additional training in tobacco and nicotine cessation.
- Familiarity with QuitNow and the BC Smoking Cessation Program.
- Training or experience in Motivational Interviewing, harm reduction, trauma-informed practice, or strengths-based care.
- Experience in primary care, pharmacy, respiratory health, mental health and addictions, and/or public health.
- Experience reviewing or developing clinical education materials.
- Knowledge of vaping and emerging nicotine products.
- Experience working with diverse and priority populations.
Contract and Availability
This is a flexible, as-needed consulting role rather than a regularly scheduled staff position. QuitNow anticipates approximately one to two provider training sessions per quarter, with occasional additional opportunities for co-presentations, events, clinical content review, and subject-matter consultation.
Training and event dates will generally be scheduled in advance and may occasionally take place during evenings or weekends. The overall volume of work will vary based on program needs, and no minimum number of hours is guaranteed.
Pay: $130.00-$165.00 per hour
