Executive Director

McMurray Métis District 17
Fort McMurray, Alberta
Full-Time | Executive Leadership Position

Lead. Inspire. Strengthen Community.

McMurray Métis District 17 is seeking a dynamic and experienced Executive Director to serve as the organization's senior administrative leader and Chief Administrative Officer (CAO). Reporting directly to the District Council, the Executive Director is responsible for leading the organization’s operations, staff, programs, finances, partnerships, and strategic initiatives while advancing the vision, values, and priorities of our Métis citizenship.

This is an exciting opportunity for a proven leader who is passionate about Indigenous governance, community development, organizational excellence, and making a meaningful impact.

What You'll Do:

As Executive Director, you will:

Strategic Leadership

  • Lead the day-to-day operations of McMurray Métis.
  • Implement Council approved strategic plans, policies, and priorities.
  • Foster a respectful, accountable, and high-performing workplace culture.
  • Develop organizational growth, sustainability, and succession planning initiatives.
  • Drive continuous improvement across all areas of the organization.

Governance & Council Support

  • Serve as the primary liaison between District Council and staff.
  • Support Council with agendas, reports, recommendations, and meeting materials.
  • Ensure Council decisions are effectively implemented.
  • Provide advice on operational matters, risks, opportunities, and organizational performance.

Financial Stewardship

  • Lead budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning processes.
  • Ensure compliance with funding agreements, audits, and financial policies.
  • Oversee grants, contributions, procurement, and financial reporting.
  • Identify funding opportunities and strategic partnerships to support long-term sustainability.

Program & Service Delivery

  • Oversee the development, delivery, evaluation, and continuous improvement of programs and services.
  • Ensure services align with community needs, Council priorities, and funding requirements.
  • Establish performance measures and accountability frameworks.

Human Resources Leadership

  • Lead recruitment, retention, performance management, and succession planning.
  • Ensure compliance with employment legislation and workplace safety requirements.
  • Promote employee development, wellness, and leadership growth.

Community Relations

  • Represent District 17 with governments, Indigenous organizations, industry partners, funders, and community stakeholders.
  • Build and strengthen collaborative partnerships.
  • Act as an ambassador for Métis culture, values, and community priorities.

What We're Looking For:

Qualifications& Experience

· Post-secondary education in Public Administration, Business Administration, Indigenous Governance, Indigenous Studies, Community Development, or a related field is required.

· Minimum five (5) years of progressive senior leadership or executive management experience is required.

· An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

· Strong experience in financial management, budgeting, and funding oversight.

· Experience serving as a Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), Executive Director, General Manager, or senior executive within an Indigenous government, community organization, non-profit, or public-sector environment is a strong asset.

· Experience working with governing boards, councils, or elected leadership.

· Strong understanding of Métis governance, Indigenous organizations, and community-based programming.

· Experience leading multi-disciplinary teams and complex operations.

Working Conditions

  • Full-time executive leadership position.
  • Based in Fort McMurray, Alberta.
  • Some evening and weekend work required as needed.
  • Travel required.
