Full job description
As the largest not-for-profit provider of seniors’ care in Alberta and British Columbia, The Good Samaritan Society and Good Samaritan Canada (together, Good Samaritan) have been providing exceptional care and support since 1949. Reporting to the Manager, Payroll & Scheduling, A Payroll Coordinator is responsible for the accurate and timely processing of payroll for employees while ensuring compliance with applicable employment standards, tax regulations, organizational policies, and collective agreements where applicable. The Payroll Coordinator serves as a key resource for payroll-related inquiries and collaborates closely with Human Resources, Finance, and operational leaders to maintain employee records and payroll integrity.
Key Responsibilities
- Process bi-weekly, semi-monthly, or monthly payroll for employees.
- Review and verify timesheets, attendance records, overtime, premiums, and leave information.
- Ensure accurate calculation and processing of wages, salaries, deductions, taxable benefits, and reimbursements.
- Maintain employee payroll records, including new hires, terminations, transfers, promotions, and compensation changes.
- Administer statutory and voluntary deductions, including income tax, CPP/QPP, EI, pension plans, benefits, and garnishments.
- Prepare and reconcile payroll reports, journal entries, and payroll-related account reconciliations.
- Ensure compliance with federal and provincial payroll legislation, employment standards, and organizational policies.
- Respond to employee and management inquiries regarding payroll, earnings, deductions, and benefits.
- Assist with year-end payroll activities, including preparation and distribution of T4s, Records of Employment (ROEs), and other statutory reporting requirements.
- Support internal and external audits by providing payroll documentation and reports.
- Collaborate with Human Resources and Finance to ensure accurate employee and payroll data management.
- Maintain confidentiality of employee information and payroll records.
Qualifications
- Diploma or certificate in Payroll Administration, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field is considered an asset
- Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) designation is required.
- Minium of three years’ experience in payroll processing and payroll systems, with a minimum of one year in an unionized environment.
- Knowledge of Canadian payroll legislation, taxation, employment standards, and payroll best practices.
- Proficiency with payroll software, HRIS systems, and Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Effective communication and customer service abilities.
- Ability to manage confidential information with discretion.
- Ability to work independently while meeting deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
