Chief Curator & Director of Exhibitions and Programs

The Art Gallery of Greater Victoria (AGGV) seeks a visionary senior leader.

Located in Victoria, BC, on the traditional territories of the Ləkʷəŋən peoples, the AGGV is Vancouver Island’s largest public gallery, stewarding over 20,000 artworks.

The Role

As a member of the senior management team, you will provide strategic oversight for exhibitions, programming, and collections. You will lead a multidisciplinary team to ensure the Gallery’s vision remains inclusive and engaging to diverse audiences.

Curatorial and Programming Leadership

  • Artistic Vision: Direct the overarching strategy for curatorial projects and public engagement.
  • Exhibition Oversight: Lead the lifecycle of original and traveling exhibitions from concept to installation.
  • Collection Growth: Drive strategic acquisitions and the stewardship of the permanent collection.

Institutional & Team Leadership

  • Institutional Leadership: Support organizational governance, fundraising, and community partnerships.
  • Team Mentorship: Foster a collaborative and high-performing environment for Curatorial and Programs staff.
  • Advocacy: Represent the Gallery publicly through media interactions and professional networks.

Requirements

  • Education: Graduate degree (MFA or MA) in Art History, Curatorial Studies, or a related field with expertise in a least one of AGGV’s collecting areas
  • Experience: Minimum 7 years of progressive curatorial leadership and collections knowledge
  • Cultural Competency: Experience working respectfully with Indigenous communities and other marginalized groups and applying cultural protocols
  • Skills: Strong strategic thinking, project management, people management and excellent communication skills

Position Details

  • Hours: Full-time (35 hours/week); generally Monday to Friday with evening and weekend work as required
  • Type: Exempt position
  • Salary Range: $95,000 - $110,000 per annum
  • Environment: A collaborative setting valuing equity, diversity, and accessibility
