Full job description
Established in 2007, Splatsin Development Corporation manages the economic interests of the Splatsin First Nations throughout the Secwepemcúlecw (Shuswap). Profits generated through natural resource construction, forestry, environmental, archaeological, culture and heritage and consumer services are invested into the Splatsin Community for the collective benefit of all members. CURRENT OPPORTUNITY:
The Safety Coordinator will work with Yucwmenlúcwu (Caretakers of the Land) managerial team and crews. This team consists of professional Environmental, Cultural Heritage, Forestry, Construction - Residential and Civil, and Splatsin Homes management and staff. The Yucwmenlúcwu team provides technical support to the Splatsin community and professional forestry, environmental, and archaeology services to our many clients and partners. The approach is focused on the protection and conservation of resources and their connection to Secwepemc people, culture, and traditions.
This position will oversee the Yucwmenlúcwu Health and Safety program, management of check ins for field technicians, manage safety related communication devices as well as site safety audits and reports.
Administrative & Reporting Duties (90%)
- Coordinate and administer the Company's Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Program.
- Maintain and update health and safety policies, procedures, safe work practices, and related documentation.
- Manage and maintain safety communication systems, bulletin boards, alerts, and employee safety resources.
- Ensure all Company safety registrations, certifications, licenses, and compliance requirements remain current.
- Track employee training, certifications, and competency requirements, ensuring timely renewals.
- Coordinate monthly Safety Committee meetings, prepare agendas, record minutes, and distribute action items.
- Monitor, track, and follow up on corrective actions arising from inspections, audits, incidents, and safety meetings.
- Maintain organized and accurate health and safety records in accordance with regulatory and Company requirements.
- Assist with incident, accident, and near-miss investigations, including completion and submission of WorkSafeBC documentation and reporting requirements.
- Compile and prepare health and safety reports, statistics, and compliance documentation for management and regulatory agencies as required.
- Manage and maintain first aid supplies, emergency response equipment, medical cabinets, and field safety kits.
- Support emergency preparedness planning, drills, and response procedures.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Technical Leadership and Execution (5%)
- Coordinate and administer Company safety registrations, regulatory filings, and compliance documentation.
- Provide guidance and support to supervisors and employees regarding health and safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
- Monitor and report on compliance with Company safety programs, safe work procedures, and legislative requirements.
- Conduct workplace inspections, safety audits, and hazard assessments to identify risks and recommend corrective actions.
- Assist in the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of health and safety programs and initiatives.
- Support the investigation and resolution of safety concerns, hazards, and workplace incidents.
Training, Engagement & Field Support (5%)
- Coordinate and deliver new employee health and safety orientations and onboarding programs.
- Monitor and audit orientation completion and training records to ensure compliance with Company standards and regulatory requirements.
- Support employee participation in health and safety initiatives through communication, coaching, and awareness activities.
- Conduct field visits and worksite inspections to assess compliance with safety requirements and safe work practices.
- Provide on-site coaching, guidance, and safety training to employees and supervisors as required.
- Promote a positive safety culture through employee engagement, education, and continuous improvement initiatives.
JOB KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS:
- Knowledge of occupational health and safety legislation, regulations, and industry best practices.
- Experience supporting health and safety programs in office, field, and operational environments.
- Ability to identify hazards, assess risks, and implement corrective actions.
- Experience conducting workplace inspections, audits, incident investigations, and compliance monitoring.
- Strong organizational, time management, and recordkeeping skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, databases, and PDF editing software.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to deliver training.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize competing demands, and maintain confidentiality.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a focus on continuous improvement.
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s License and willingness to travel to worksites as required.
