Title: Development Manager
Our Story:
The Terry Fox Humanitarian Award Program was established in 1982 in honour of Terry Fox, one of Canada’s most beloved heroes. In his lifetime, Terry captured the hearts of Canadians across the expansive country. To this day, he is widely recognized all over the world for his extraordinary sense of purpose and the ideals of courage, determination, and altruism. The Terry Fox Humanitarian Award Program was created to commemorate Terry’s remarkable life by identifying and investing in young Canadians who carry Terry Fox’s spirit forward through exceptional character, and contributions in humanitarianism, community/civic service, sport, and academics.
After 44 years, the vision of the Terry Fox Humanitarian Award Program is being re-imagined, making it an exciting time to join the organization. Solving global problems, enabling humanitarian youth by providing a transformative experience, and honouring and advancing the humanitarian legacy of Terry Fox – one of Canada’s most recognized heroes – by encouraging Canadians to emulate his courage and determination to improve the lives of others, is at the heart of what we do.
Job Description
Responsibilities
1. Annual Giving and Alumni Relations:
- We have more than 1,100 alumni, and we are looking to grow our donor base to include corporations, major donors, DAFs, and individuals beyond our alumni. You will have the opportunity to develop new networks, deepen alumni relations, and support the development of a robust fundraising strategy.
- Working closely with the marketing team and the Experience Officer, Students and Alumni, you will help shape a communications strategy that grows philanthropy and builds donor relations.
- Cultivate existing and new relationships, and develop and execute peer-to-peer fundraising programs and fundraising events.
- Stay informed about key trends in fund development, fundraising, donor behaviour, and enabling technologies, identifying relevant opportunities and challenges.
- Collaborate with key stakeholders and partners to deliver philanthropy initiatives, including grant submissions and management, individual, corporate, DAF, and foundation donor engagement, and other related activities.
2. Donor Engagement & Stewardship:
- Implement giving programs that create personalized donor experiences through outreach, communications, proposals, impact reports, stewardship, and recognition.
- Ensure accurate donor database management, tax receipting, reporting, and CRA compliance.
- Prepare regular fundraising reports for the CEO, including revenue by channel, progress to goal, and donor/prospect pipeline status.
3. Leadership & Planned Giving:
- Cultivate relationships with partners that align with the Terry Fox Humanitarian Award Program’s mission and values.
- Support the CEO and Board in advancing TFHA’s corporate partnership strategy (including the Founding National Partner initiative) — for example, prospect research, scheduling, and preparing meeting materials and stewardship communications.
- Develop a new major gifts portfolio of donors and alumni, including managing donor relationships and developing tailored engagement plans for major gift prospects.
- Implement planned giving strategies including email, mail, and donor meetings, as outlined in an existing strategy created by a planned giving expert.
4. Events:
- Plan and execute both virtual and in-person events. This includes building relationships with donors and alumni, as well as raising funds when appropriate.
- Working with administrative and marketing staff, coordinate logistics, budgets, and promotional activities for events.
- Ensure events achieve their objectives.
- Providing a positive stakeholder experience (i.e. for student, alumni, donors, government, and corporate partners).
5. Database Management:
- Maintain accurate donor, prospect, gift, and giving-history data in Keela, TFHA’s donor CRM and system of record, and integrate reporting from Charitable Impact, Raisely, and Canada Gives.
- Use database insights to target engagement strategies and improve donor retention and acquisition.
6. Administrative:
- Handle administrative tasks related to fundraising and donor engagement.
- As part of a collaborative team, you will occasionally take on other responsibilities, provided they do not interfere with your ability to complete the above fundraising priorities.
Qualifications:
- 3–5 years of proven experience in relationship building, fundraising, major gifts, planned giving, or related roles.
- Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) designation, or working toward one, is considered an asset.
- Working knowledge of Canadian charitable giving vehicles (e.g., gifts of securities, donor-advised funds, employer matching, planned/legacy gifts) and CRA receipting requirements.
- Post-secondary degree or diploma in a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Strong financial acumen, including the ability to create, manage, and report on fundraising plans and budgets.
- Event management and project management skills.
- Familiarity with donor database/CRM management, including experience with Keela, TFHA’s CRM, Raisely, Charitable Impact, and Canada Gives, is considered an asset, as is proficiency with Microsoft 365.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Preference for bilingual French-English candidates.
- Ability to collaborate with team members and take on managerial responsibilities.
Benefits:
- Salary range: $85,000–$95,000.
- Vacation: Two weeks.
- Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance.
- Health Spending Account.
- Work format: Hybrid. The office is located at Simon Fraser University on Burnaby Mountain.
