Professor, Criminology

Duties:

Vancouver Island University's Faculty of Social Sciences invites applications for a permanent half-time faculty position in the Criminology Department. The Faculty seeks an excellent teacher who brings applied expertise in criminal law to undergraduate instruction.

The position involves teaching a range of undergraduate courses in criminology, criminal law, and criminal procedure. The successful appointee will demonstrate a commitment to maintaining current knowledge in these areas and an ability to integrate legal practice, theory, and critical analysis in the classroom. Candidates who are enthusiastic about mentoring students and supporting their academic development within a criminology context are particularly encouraged to apply.

Teaching responsibilities will align with a half-time appointment. The position requires teaching at both the Nanaimo and Cowichan campuses.

The appointee is expected to demonstrate excellence in teaching, a strong commitment to student learning and success, and a willingness to contribute to departmental, Faculty, and institutional service and governance. Evidence of teaching effectiveness and professional engagement may include student evaluations, teaching records, and other relevant supporting documentation.

The faculty member will teach both foundational and specialized courses within the Criminology program, including courses in criminal law and criminal procedure, and will assess student learning in accordance with departmental and Faculty of Social Sciences norms.

Candidates must demonstrate commitment to teaching, learning and student success through scholarship and institutional service. Successful candidates will participate in a wide range of activities outside the classroom, including student support; institutional, faculty and departmental committee meetings and other initiatives; and professional activities in keeping with their disciplines in and outside the institution.

Required Qualifications:

A PhD in Criminology or a closely related discipline, or a JD or equivalent law degree combined with a relevant graduate degree in Criminology, Sociology, or a closely related discipline. Demonstrated excellence in undergraduate teaching and proficiency with instructional and educational technologies relevant to the position.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience teaching criminal law and other Criminology courses at the undergraduate level; experience practicing law, particularly in criminal law or related areas; and demonstrated ability to teach across the Criminology curriculum.
