Full job description

Overview:

Our organization provides specialized residential care for adults and/or children within the developmental services sector. We provide behavioral supervision and support mostly for people who are dual diagnosed (e.g., development need and a mental health issue). A typical residence or ‘program’ includes between two to four clients who are supported by direct support workers. (We also support clients who are living independently or in family homes.) Staff to client ratios vary based on client needs; most of our clients receive supervision and support 24 hours a day 7 days a week. As such, most of our programs are considered continuous operations.

The Direct Support Worker (DSW) is accountable for efficient and effective day-to-day behavioural support for residents. The position reports to the Program Supervisor. The Direct Support Workers’ mandate is to provide a safe, predictable, and therapeutic environment for the clients in our care.

The outline of responsibilities includes:

Participating in the implementation of behavior support plans including hands-on care and daily living activities.

Promoting community inclusion, independence and self-determinism for the individuals supported. Support clients to identify, work towards and achieve their goals/personal outcomes.

Encouraging self-expression of individuals supported utilizing verbal and nonverbal communications.

Utilizing problem-solving skills to work collaboratively within a team and with families.

Completing all required electronic documentation and reports, accurately and within set time frames.

Applying behavior techniques and interventions.

Making careful and accurate observations of supported individuals, completing written assessments and reports throughout shifts.

Encouraging and assisting clients to participate in social, educational, community and recreational activities to enhance their experience and quality of life.

Taking an active role to ensure the home and property remains clean, tidy and safe for our clients.

Families 1st has created rotating and non-rotating shifts designed allow for consistent shifts and some weekends off. Applicants must be physically able to fulfill the job requirements which includes physical interventions or containments as needed. Other qualifications we will look for when reviewing resumes include:

Post-secondary diploma in Social Service Worker, Child and Youth Care, Child Youth Worker, Developmental Support Worker or equivalent, from a recognized community college, or a related Social Service Field.

Minimum of 2 years experience in the field of Child and Youth Work, particularly in residential treatment for behavioural adults and/or children with complex developmental needs, autism spectrum disorder, Schizophrenic spectrum disorders, mental illness, and dual diagnosis.

Experience and sound knowledge of MCCSS guidelines and Quality Assurance Management (QAM) requirements for the licensing of residential programs is an asset.

Must possess a valid G-class driver’s license and insurance.

Willingness to complete certification in Safe Management Crisis Intervention (SMG)

Ability to plan, prioritize, organize and implement daily routines responsibilities

Strong English verbal and written communication skills

Ability to use discretion in a fast paced, residential treatment setting

Sound crisis management skills

Valid First Aid Certificate and CPR level C

Basic computer skills
