The Faculty of Health Sciences and Human Services includes the Departments of Child and Youth Care, Dental Assistant, Dental Hygiene, Health Care Assistant, Nursing, Practical Nursing, Social Work, Kinesiology, and a Professional Development and Training department. The mission of the Faculty is to foster student success and develop and maintain relevant, responsive, and stimulating learning opportunities that are community-based, globally and locally, and offered in a visionary, interprofessional environment that is conducive to learning and promotes health and wellness for all. The Dean and the Dean's Office lead, manage, administer and support the instructional, scholarly and outreach activities of the Faculty on four campuses with this mission in mind.

Duties:

The Kinesiology program at Vancouver Island University (VIU) offers a Bachelor of Kinesiology degree. The department is looking to establish a pool of qualified sessional instructors to teach a variety of Kinesiology courses throughout the academic year (Fall, Spring and May Intersession).

Current needs include:

  • Active rehabilitation (KIN 492E)
  • Nutrition for health and sport (KIN 352)

Potential topic areas may include:

  • Exercise physiology (KIN 302)
  • Clinical assessment (KIN 492B)
  • Advanced (clinical) exercise prescription (KIN 492C)
  • Sport & exercise psychology (KIN 362)
  • Motor development (KIN 202)
  • Health promotion (KIN 230; KIN 360)

For clinically relevant courses (i.e., KIN 492 series), professional certifications (PT, OT, BCAK, CSEP, ACSM, CSPA, etc.) in the discipline are preferred. The ideal candidate will have experience working with a wide variety of clients/populations. Collegiality, flexibility, and enthusiasm for the art and science of human movement are desired characteristics.

Candidates must demonstrate commitment to teaching, learning and student success through scholarship and institutional service. Successful candidates will participate in a wide range of activities outside the classroom, including student support; institutional, faculty and departmental committee meetings and other initiatives; and professional activities in keeping with their disciplines in and outside the institution.

Required Qualifications:

For academic courses (200-400 level), a Masters' degree in Kinesiology or related field, from an appropriately accredited institution. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

For activity courses (100 level), proven acquired expertise through documented professional certification and training in the respective sport or activity (NCCP or equivalent certifications). An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.

  • Experience in post-secondary teaching.
  • Provide evidence of an ability to respond to diverse learning styles, engage students with different cultural and academic backgrounds, and function effectively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Professional designation (e.g., OT, PT, Chiropractic, Kinesiologist).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in Kinesiology or a related field.
  • Expertise in instruction at the post-secondary level.
