About the Role

Virtus Financial Group is a real estate investment and asset management company overseeing a diversified portfolio including Virtus Diversified REIT (VDREIT) and related investment vehicles. We are looking for a detail-oriented Junior Accountant to join our Accounts Payable team. This is an entry-level opportunity — no prior work experience required — ideal for a recent graduate who is eager to build a career in real estate accounting. We welcome CPA students and are committed to providing meaningful, hands-on experience aligned with the CPA practical experience requirements.

Key Responsibilities

General Accounting & Reporting

  • Assist with month-end close including accruals, prepaid amortization, and journal entries
  • Prepare bank reconciliations and support audit working paper preparation
  • Assist with HST/GST filings and property-level expense tracking
  • Generate AP aging reports and cash disbursement schedules
  • Process and code vendor invoices accurately across multiple real estate entities
  • Perform three-way matching of purchase orders, receiving documents, and invoices
  • Prepare and execute weekly payment runs including EFTs, wires, and cheques
  • Reconcile vendor statements and resolve discrepancies; respond to vendor inquiries
  • Post and apply tenant rent payments and recovery billings (CAM, property tax, utilities) in Yardi, ensuring charges align with lease terms
  • Monitor tenant receivables, prepare monthly AR aging reports, and follow up on outstanding balances, escalating collection issues as needed
  • Reconcile tenant ledgers and resolve payment discrepancies, and support month-end close and year-end audit requests related to receivables

Qualifications

Required

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
  • Strong grasp of fundamental accounting principles (debits, credits, accruals, reconciliations)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel; strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Professional communication skills and ability to manage competing deadlines

Assets

  • Pursuit of the CPA designation
  • Exposure to real estate or investment fund accounting (academic projects welcome)
  • Familiarity with accounting software such as Yardi, MRI, or QuickBooks
