About Workers’ Safety and Compensation Commission (WSCC)
The WSCC is an arm's length government agency responsible for administering the Workers' Compensation Acts, Safety Acts, Explosives Use Acts and the Mine Health and Safety Acts.
Together, with their partners, the WSCC provides services to almost 40,000 workers and 4,000 employers across the Northwest Territories and Nunavut, processes over 3,000 claims annually, and conducts over 1,000 inspections annually to ensure the safety of northern workplaces. The WSCC is unique in Canada as it is the only workers' compensation organization in the country to insure workers across more than one province or territory.

About the Opportunity
WSCC is looking for a full-time Deputy Chief Safety Officer based in Iqaluit, NU. Occasional duty travel to other Northern communities and throughout Canada is required.
Reporting to the Chief Safety Officer, this role is responsible for overseeing occupational health and safety enforcement and compliance, fostering a strong safety culture, and building partnerships with internal and external stakeholders.
More specifically, your responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Reviewing and providing feedback on investigations and inspections to ensure effective enforcement of the Safety Act and Regulations
- Building alliances and fostering professional relationships with government agencies, regulatory bodies, industry leaders, and other stakeholders
- Representing WSCC in discussions on occupational health and safety (OHS) with community and territorial leaders, regulatory agencies, and labour representatives
- Collaborating with teams in Iqaluit and Yellowknife to align practices and enhance consistency in OHS enforcement
- Managing financial resources, including budgetary submissions, variance monitoring, and overall financial oversight for the unit
- Establishing and maintaining strategic goals that align with WSCC's corporate plan
- Providing leadership and guidance to officers in occupational health and safety enforcement
- Analyzing data to determine trends, risks, and opportunities for improvement in workplace safety
- Ensuring compliance with industry standards, best practices, and legislative requirements across various industries
- Supporting the advancement of workplace safety culture through education, advocacy, and policy development

About You
To qualify, you will need a degree or certification in Occupational Health and Safety from a recognized institution and a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation. A minimum of 5 years of progressive industrial experience in occupational health and safety, along with 3 years of recent senior management experience, will also be essential. A valid Class 5 driver’s license is required.
Additionally, the following skills and background will be highly valued:
- Strong ability to analyze data and determine appropriate courses of action
- Experience interpreting and applying legislation and industry standards across various industries
- Familiarity with regulatory committees and jurisdictional safety frameworks
- Bilingual in English and French is an asset
