General Manager – Catering & Café Operations
Position: General Manager
Employment Type: Full-Time, In-Person
Schedule: Monday–Friday, with occasional weekend work as required
Reports To: Ownership
Position Overview
We are seeking an organized, proactive and hands-on General Manager to oversee the day-to-day operations of our established catering company and eat-in café. The General Manager will be responsible for ensuring that the business operates smoothly, efficiently and professionally across all areas of operations. This includes staff management, scheduling, administrative oversight, regulatory compliance, vehicle and facility management, catering logistics, customer service and general office administration.
This is a highly hands-on position suited to someone who takes ownership of their responsibilities, anticipates operational needs and is comfortable moving between management-level responsibilities and everyday tasks required to keep a busy catering and hospitality business running successfully.
Key Responsibilities
Staff Management & Operations
- Manage, support and provide day-to-day direction to café, catering, administrative and operational staff.
- Assist with staff scheduling, training, onboarding, performance management and maintaining appropriate staffing levels.
- Oversee daily café and catering operations, ensuring service standards, cleanliness, organization and operational requirements are maintained.
- Collaborate with the Executive Chef and Business Development & Sales Manager to ensure the smooth execution of catering orders and events.
Catering, Deliveries & Logistics
- Review upcoming catering orders and events and proactively coordinate operational requirements.
- Schedule deliveries, drivers, vehicles and routes, ensuring orders are dispatched accurately and on time.
- Troubleshoot last-minute operational, staffing, delivery or client-related issues as required.
Administration & Compliance
- Ensure business licences, permits, insurance policies, certifications and other required documentation remain current and are renewed on time.
- Maintain organized company records, operational documents, schedules and filing systems.
- Complete general administrative duties including printing documents, preparing event paperwork, ordering office supplies and maintaining an organized and professional office environment.
- Assist ownership with administrative projects, documentation and correspondence as required.
Vehicles, Facilities & Equipment
- Oversee company vehicles, including maintenance schedules, servicing, repairs, insurance, registration and cleanliness.
- Monitor the condition of the café, office and operational spaces and coordinate maintenance or repairs when required.
- Ensure company equipment and operational supplies are properly maintained and available when needed.
Client & Vendor Relations
- Professionally greet and assist walk-in clients and respond to general catering inquiries.
- Help resolve client or customer concerns and ensure a high standard of customer service.
- Coordinate with vendors, contractors and service providers as required.
Event Planning & Customer Service (temporary)
For an approximately three-month maternity leave period, the General Manager will provide coverage for key responsibilities of the Business Development & Sales Manager, including:
- Responding to catering inquiries and maintaining timely, professional communication with new and existing clients.
- Preparing catering quotes and proposals, processing bookings and coordinating event details with clients.
- Assisting clients with menu selections, rentals, staffing, delivery requirements and other event-planning needs.
- Managing client follow-up and ensuring confirmed events are accurately communicated to the Executive Chef and operational team.
- Providing general customer service and client relationship management to maintain continuity and a high standard of service throughout the leave period.
General Management
- Serve as the primary point person for day-to-day operational matters.
- Identify operational issues and inefficiencies and implement practical solutions.
- Ensure assigned tasks and responsibilities are followed through to completion.
- Keep ownership informed of significant staffing, operational, compliance or facility matters.
- Assist wherever required to ensure the smooth operation of the business.
Qualifications & Attributes
- Legally able to work in BC.
- Previous management experience, ideally within catering, hospitality, restaurants, events or a related industry with a minimum of five years' experience.
- Strong leadership, organizational and administrative skills.
- Excellent communication, customer service and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to prioritize and manage multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment.
- Proactive, dependable, detail-oriented and comfortable taking ownership of responsibilities.
- Strong computer skills and comfort with common office and business software.
- Valid BC driver's licence and clean driving record.
- Willingness to work occasional weekends when operational or event requirements necessitate it.
