Full job description

Metrolinx is connecting communities across the Greater Golden Horseshoe. Metrolinx operates GO Transit and UP Express, as well as the PRESTO fare payment system. We are also building new and improved rapid transit, including GO Expansion, Light Rail Transit routes, and major expansions to Toronto’s subway system, to get people where they need to go, better, faster and easier. Metrolinx is an agency of the Government of Ontario.

This role is an in‑office position based at our 130 Adelaide Street location. Our team is highly collaborative, and much of our work benefits from in‑person co‑creation, relationship‑building, and hands‑on partnership with leaders across the organization.
The Rail Simulation Specialist position oversees, monitors and provides evidence-based studies and service modelling that allows Metrolinx to achieve the objectives of Network expansion and advance the development of its rail network strategic objectives.

What will I be doing?
  • Responsible for modelling and simulating rail network utilization scenarios using industry and best practice standards.
  • Conducts rail network analyses, studies, computer simulation model development or modification, and technical report generation to address a wide range of operating, infrastructure and performance issues.
  • Perform operational analysis using historical data, scenario models and rail network design.
  • Validate system requirements through operational analysis and rail network planning.
  • Incorporating Network service growth and future expansion alternative models, identifying infrastructure requirements and constraints.
  • Conducts analysis of results and identifies trends in rail scheduling issues and recommends efficiencies to methodologies and processes for network expansion, service delivery and cost improvements as related to service expansion and construction activities.
  • Reviews proposals for additional service increases and infrastructure projects. Analyzes risk to rail operations and customer satisfaction by contributing to the development of rail service recovery plans.
  • Anticipates and leads the development of infrastructure requirements for service expansion growth as well as construction activities that would reduce capacity and recommends solutions for high risk areas and issues.
  • Builds strong collaborative relationships with all external stakeholders (e.g. other railways operators, municipalities, External consultants) regarding the scheduling characteristics and infrastructure proposals being developed to address conflicts and concerns.
  • Communicates and works with stakeholders to review and validate service level increases through the use of Open Track software.
  • Works to ensure consistent awareness of current and future service expansion growth activities in order to plan train service schedules with minimum disruption to customer satisfaction.
  • Ensures analysis reports are effectively communicated to all stakeholders and executed with strategic planning.
  • Exercises due diligence to monitor project and program progress to deliver program objectives on time and within budget and achieve anticipated business results.

What Skills and Qualifications Do I Need?
  • Completion of a university degree in engineering, information technology transportation planning, economics or a related discipline – or a combination of education, training and experience deemed equivalent.
  • Demonstrated years of experience in rail operations analysis, rail network planning and rail network simulation.
  • Diverse experience of modelling and analyzing various rail networks (commuter, passenger and freight etc.).
  • Knowledge of Open Track and other train simulation and modeling software is an asset.
  • Proficient in OpenTrack, Rail Traffic Controller (RTC), or equivalent rail network simulation software, an asset.
  • Demonstrated competency in modelling and analyzing rail networks using industry and best practice standards.
  • Highly analytical; adept at investigating complex technical problems and applying engineering principles and due rigor to determine appropriate, pragmatic and sensible solutions.
  • Knowledge of applicable industry standards, regulations and code.
  • Shows initiative and takes accountability for work.
