Job Title: Shelter Worker, Truro

Scope of Position: Souls Harbour Rescue Mission is a vibrant, young, fast-growing Christian charity with an entrepreneurial spirit and a company culture driven by our core values of evangelism, discipleship, charity (love and good deeds) and expansion. One of the principal ways we accomplish our mission is through our Drop In Centres, where we provide food, clothing, shelter and transformational recovery programs. Our client culture is “Where everybody knows your name”, and, “If you don’t have a friend in the world, you can find one here.” We strive to provide an atmosphere of welcome, hope and dignity as we serve up to 125,000 meals and provide 7665 nights of shelter each year. The Truro Overnight Shelter Worker will be a person who is committed to providing a warm and welcoming environment through a commitment to our standards of excellence, radical hospitality, and community service.

Organizational Relationships & Supervision:

Location of Position: Truro Shelter (130 King Street, Truro)

Reports to: Truro Shelter Supervisor

Authority: Granted to supervise and discipline guests, according to warming shelter rules. This person should freely seek advice or assistance when dealing with a difficult person or situation, particularly if it is a new, unfamiliar situation.

Non-Negotiable Requirements:

  • Deep compassion for individuals experiencing homelessness
  • Adhere to all certification and legal directives
  • Must complete a criminal record check
  • Have basic first aid training & food safety
  • Agree to abide by the mission and doctrinal statements

Qualifications:

  • Ability to handle crisis situations
  • Ability to enforce the rules without losing your patience
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Patient and good listening skills

Expected Results:

Objectives: To maintain practical aspects / operations of the shelter overnight.

Specific Duties:

  • Ensure the building is open and ready for guests during operating hours
  • Serve a light supper after opening
  • Ensure drinks and light snacks are available as needed
  • Uphold a zero tolerance policy for drugs and alcohol on site
  • Follow security and emergency procedures for accidents, trespassing, or violence.
  • Ensure residents go up to their rooms by “lights out.”
  • Ensure that the dorm area is quiet at all times for those who sleep early.
  • Do hourly physical inspections of all floors and exterior property.
  • Complete assigned janitorial tasks such as snow clearing, cleaning and laundry
  • Attend mandatory staff meetings and events
  • Other duties as assigned to support the needs of the Mission
