About the Opportunity

Homes First Society is looking for a full-time Property Management Safety and Compliance Coordinator working within the City of Toronto, Ontario.

Reporting to the Project Manager, you will play a pivotal role in supporting health, safety, fire and life-safety compliance across Homes First’s housing and shelter locations.

In this position, you will be primarily responsible for conducting routine site inspections, maintaining compliance records, identifying safety concerns, and coordinating the corrective work needed to provide safe environments for residents, clients, and employees.

More specifically, your responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Conducting routine health, safety, fire and life-safety inspections across housing and shelter sites
  • Monitoring compliance with applicable legislation, fire codes, organizational policies, and established safety procedures
  • Inspecting exits, fire doors, alarms, emergency lighting, signage, first-aid supplies, and other safety equipment
  • Identifying and documenting deficiencies, hazards, and required corrective actions
  • Coordinating work orders and following up with site teams, maintenance personnel, and external service providers
  • Maintaining accurate inspection records, compliance documentation, trackers, and reports
  • Supporting emergency preparedness activities, safety procedures, and related staff training
  • Collaborating with site teams to promote safe, respectful, and responsive practices across the organization

About You

To qualify, you will need 1+ year of experience in fire safety, life-safety systems, or health and safety work involving fire and life-safety responsibilities, along with a college or university certificate or diploma in Fire Protection Engineering, Fire and Emergency Services, Fire and Life Safety, or a recognized equivalent.

The following are required:

  • Ability and willingness to travel between Homes First locations throughout Toronto
  • Comfort working in housing and shelter environments where pets or incidental exposure to cigarette smoke may be present
  • Ability to undergo a criminal record check

Additionally, the following skills and background will be highly valued:

  • Experience working or volunteering with people who are unhoused or underhoused, including those experiencing mental health or substance-use challenges
  • Knowledge of Ontario health and safety, fire and life-safety requirements
  • Experience conducting inspections and supporting regulatory compliance
  • Experience in supportive housing, shelters, community services, property management, or facilities management
  • Familiarity with emergency procedures, fire-safety equipment, and life-safety systems
  • Strong documentation, record-keeping, and report-writing abilities
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office
  • Health and safety training that includes fire and life-safety components

Compensation is a competitive annual salary of $58,000, along with a host of excellent benefits, including:
