Full job description
We are a growing personal injury law firm serving clients throughout the GTA. We are seeking an experienced Legal Assistant to join our Tort Department.
The ideal candidate will have at least 2 years of experience working on plaintiff-side personal injury/tort files in Ontario and be comfortable supporting lawyers with an active caseload from commencement of an action through discovery, mediation, and settlement.
Responsibilities
- Assist lawyers with the day-to-day management of personal injury tort files
- Draft and prepare pleadings, correspondence, Affidavits of Documents, undertakings, and other litigation documents
- Prepare and serve/file court documents in accordance with applicable deadlines
- Schedule examinations for discovery, mediations, motions, and other litigation-related appointments
- Request, organize, and follow up on medical records, clinical notes and records, OHIP summaries, employment records, and other productions
- Assist with preparation for discoveries and mediations
- Track undertakings, limitation periods, court deadlines, and other important dates
- Communicate professionally with clients, opposing counsel, insurance adjusters, medical providers, and experts
- Maintain organized and accurate electronic files
- Provide general administrative and litigation support to lawyers
- Ensure files are progressing and follow up on outstanding documentation and productions
Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years of legal assistant experience in personal injury/tort litigation
- Experience with plaintiff-side personal injury is strongly preferred
- Good knowledge of Ontario litigation procedures and the Rules of Civil Procedure
- Experience preparing pleadings and litigation documents
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple files and deadlines
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong attention to detail
- Ability to work independently while also working effectively as part of a team
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and legal practice/case management software
Compensation
$50,000–$70,000 per year, depending on experience and qualifications.
