Full job description
At Helm Operations, we build the software that keeps the world’s maritime operations moving. From tugboats in Vancouver Harbour to offshore service vessels in the North Sea, our customers run their businesses with Helm CONNECT. And we don’t take that lightly.
We’ve grown from a small start-up on Canada’s west coast into a global leader serving many of the world’s largest maritime companies. Our mission is simple: deliver software that connects the marine industry like no other technology company.
But world-class software doesn’t happen by accident, it takes tough teams, ownership, and deep care for customers. That’s The Helm Way.
Now, we’re looking for a Software Developer who’s ready to bring curiosity, craftsmanship, and courage to our expanding crew.
Your Mission
As a Software Developer at Helm, you’ll design, build, and enhance the next generation of features that power Helm CONNECT. You’ll work across the stack from front-end to back-end, collaborating with product, QA, and other developers to create elegant, reliable, and scalable solutions that help real-world marine crews do their jobs more safely and efficiently.
You’ll thrive here if you love owning outcomes, sharpening your skills, and coding with purpose.
Make your impact with a rapidly growing Marine Software business!
You Will
Design & Develop
· Build, test, and maintain features across our Helm CONNECT product lines.
· Develop integrations between Helm CONNECT and third-party systems.
· Write clean, maintainable code in C#, .NET, Vue, TypeScript, and PostgreSQL.
· Participate in code reviews, providing and receiving constructive feedback.
· Troubleshoot, debug, and optimize performance across the stack.
Collaborate & Deliver
· Partner with Product Managers and UX to translate ideas into reality.
· Participate in daily stand-ups, kick-offs, collaborative estimation, and retrospective meetings.
· Break down requirements into actionable, estimable development tickets.
· Contribute to infrastructure-as-code, monitoring, and test automation to ensure reliability.
Learn & Improve
· Continuously refine our development practices, tools, and standards.
· Share knowledge, mentor peers, and help the team deliver faster, better, and stronger.
· Support occasional on-call rotations (~1 week/month) with stipend and coverage pay.
You Bring
· 4 + years of hands-on full-stack development experience.
· Strong proficiency in C# / .NET (Core or 8).
· Experience with JavaScript/TypeScript and Vue 2 or 3.
· Solid understanding of relational databases (PostgreSQL or SQL Server).
· Knowledge of HTML5, CSS/Less, T-SQL, and version control (Git/GitHub).
· Familiarity with agile development, modern DevOps tools, and cloud platforms (AWS is a plus).
· Broad technical curiosity and learning agility, you like figuring things out.
· Ability to work autonomously and collaboratively in a remote, distributed team.
Bonus Points
· Exposure to DevOps workflows or CI/CD pipelines.
· Experience with AWS services or cloud-based deployments.
· Background in maritime, logistics, or industrial software (not required but nice to have).
Who You Are
· Innovator: You look for smarter, cleaner ways to solve problems.
· Builder: You enjoy transforming ideas into high-impact features.
· Collaborator: You believe in teamwork, open communication, and helping others succeed
· Owner: You take responsibility for outcomes, not just code commits.
· Learner: You seek feedback, stay curious, and keep improving.
· Culture Driver: You contribute to a team that works hard and has fun doing it.
