Full job description

St. Joseph’s Health Centre is seeking a Medical Laboratory Technologist to join its Core Laboratory team, comprised of Biochemistry, Hematology, and Transfusion Medicine , supporting high-quality, patient-centered diagnostic services in a dynamic hospital environment.

The successful candidate will demonstrate strong technical competence, adaptability, and a commitment to quality, safety, and continuous improvement.

Duties & Responsibilities

As part of a multidisciplinary Core Laboratory team, the Medical Laboratory Technologist will:

  • Perform pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical testing within their assigned discipline of the Core Laboratory.
  • Rotate through all assigned workstations and support cross-coverage as operationally required.
  • Prioritize workload to meet turnaround times, including STAT and urgent testing.
  • Identify abnormal or discrepant results and take appropriate action, escalating concerns to appropriate clinical or technical resources.
  • Prepare, authorize, and interpret laboratory results with accuracy and attention to quality standards.
  • Respond to inquiries regarding specimen collection, test results, and result interpretation.
  • Perform routine and preventative maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting of laboratory instruments.
  • Adhere to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and all components of the laboratory quality management system, including:

o Quality control (QC) testing and assessment

o Quality assurance (QA) activities

o Incident reporting and non-conformance documentation

  • Participate in the development, review, and maintenance of SOPs and validation documentation.
  • Support inventory, material management, safety programs, and accreditation readiness.
  • Participate in the training and mentorship of new staff, students, residents, and learners.
  • Engage in test development, method validation, technical projects, and continuing education.
  • Foster effective collaboration with internal and external stakeholders to support patient care.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Current registration in good standing with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO) .
  • Recent hospital laboratory experience (within the last two years) in one or more of the following areas:

o Biochemistry

o Hematology

o Transfusion Medicine

  • Demonstrated ability to work across multiple disciplines within a core laboratory model.
  • Proficiency with laboratory information systems (Epic, WellSky Transfusion, CareSphere, Remisol and Data Innovations, Unity Real-Time) and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with a collaborative, team-focused approach.
  • Strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Commitment to the hospital’s mission, values, and patient-centered care.
  • Reliable attendance and punctuality.
  • Experience in quality management systems, teaching, research, or method development is considered an asset.
