Full job description

About Locke Cycle & Social House

Locke Cycle & Social House is a specialty cafe, craft social house, and cycling hub. We bring together high-quality coffee, food, craft beverages, and active cycling culture under one roof. We are building a neighborhood anchor for cyclists, coffee lovers, and the local community.

Role Overview

We are looking for a hands-on, high-energy General Manager who leads from the front. As a Working Manager, you won't be hidden away in an office—you’ll split your week between leading high-volume floor shifts (25–30 hours) and executing tight administrative and financial operations (10–15 hours).

Crucially, you are an active cyclist who lives the culture. You will be the face of our community, leading group rides, engaging local riding clubs, and hosting post-ride gatherings.

Weekly Time & Role Allocation

As a Working General Manager, your week is purposefully divided between direct floor leadership and administrative operations. You will spend the majority of your time—approximately 25 to 30 hours per week—actively working on the floor, leading shifts, supporting baristas, ensuring speed of service, and maintaining exceptional quality and hospitality standards. The remaining 10 to 15 hours will be dedicated to administrative management, where you will handle labor scheduling, payroll preparation, weekly vendor ordering, inventory par management, waste tracking, daily cash audits, and weekly owner updates. Integrated naturally throughout your week, you will also serve as our primary cycling culture ambassador, actively leading and participating in shop-hosted group rides, organizing social meetups, and building a strong community connection both on and off the bike.

Core Responsibilities

1. Floor Leadership & Operational Excellence (25–30 Hours/Week)

  • Lead by Example: Work floor shifts during peak rushes, setting the gold standard for hospitality, speed, cleanliness, and beverage excellence.
  • Quality Control: Oversee espresso calibration, kitchen prep, food presentation, and customer service standards across all shifts.
  • Shop Atmosphere: Maintain a clean, energetic, and welcoming social environment for cyclists, neighborhood regulars, and visitors.

2. Cycling Culture & Community Engagement

  • Ride Leader & Ambassador: Passionately participate in and lead regularly scheduled group rides (road, gravel, social spins) hosted by Locke Cycle & Social House.
  • Community Connection: Engage local cycling clubs, fitness groups, and community partners to make the shop their primary meeting point.
  • Event Execution: Coordinate post-ride socials, art nights, cycling product drops, and community events with ownership.

3. Financial & Administrative Systems (10–15 Hours/Week)

  • Scheduling & Labor Control: Prepare and publish bi-weekly staff schedules 2 weeks in advance. Monitor and adjust real-time labor-to-sales ratios.
  • Ordering & Par Levels: Place weekly vendor orders (coffee, milk, kitchen perishables, retail supplies) on designated order days, maintaining appropriate par levels without excess waste.
  • Cash Handling & Payroll: Perform daily sales reconciliations, bank deposits, tip calculations, and monthly cash counts. Perform daily timecard audits and finalize bi-weekly payroll reports.
  • Waste & Cost Management: Audit daily waste logs, track invoices against budget, and train staff to minimize milk and food waste.
  • Owner Reporting: Meet weekly with ownership to deliver a concise "Weekly Pulse" report covering sales trends, labor %, inventory, and community ride metrics.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Active Cyclist: Passionate about cycling (road, gravel, commuter, or MTB) with a high level of enthusiasm for participating in and leading group rides.
  • Management Experience: 2+ years of supervisory/management experience in a specialty coffee shop, cafe, or high-volume hospitality environment.
  • Working Manager Mindset: Strong multi-tasking skills with a drive to be on the floor during busy hours while keeping administrative tasks organized and on deadline.
  • Administrative & Financial Literacy: Understanding of food cost, labor percentages, inventory management, and basic scheduling/payroll software.
  • Leadership & Communication: Natural community builder with strong interpersonal skills and conflict resolution abilities.
  • Certifications: Food Handler Certification and Smart Serve (or willingness to obtain prior to start).
  • Flexibility: Availability to work early mornings, weekends, and schedule shifts around group rides and events.

Pay: From $24.00 per hour

Ability to commute/relocate:

  • Hamilton, ON L8P 4B4: reliably commute or plan to relocate before starting work (preferred)

Education:

  • DCS / DEC (preferred)

Experience:

  • Restaurant management: 3 years (required)

Licence/Certification:

  • Smart Serve (required)
  • Food Handler Certification (required)

Work Location: In person
