Tenure-Track Assistant Professor, Developmental Studies

The Faculty of Education at the University of Winnipeg invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position in Developmental Studies at the rank of Assistant Professor.

The University of Winnipeg is located on Treaty One Territory and the National Homeland of the Red River Métis, in Wiiniibak, Manido Abi. We acknowledge these are the ancestral lands of the Anishinaabeg, Anisininew, Ininiwak/Nehethowuk, Oceti Sakowin/Dakota Oyate, and Michif (Métis) Peoples. This territory is also a place of significance for the Denesuline and the Inuit, some of whom have been living here for generations.

The Developmental Studies program is housed in the Faculty of Education with about 100 students led by one faculty member Director and one additional faculty member (in addition to this advertised position). We offer a three-year Bachelor’s degree; a four-year joint Bachelor’s degree in partnership with Red River College Polytech and Université de Saint-Boniface, which enables students to receive provincial certification in early childhood education (ECE levels II and III); and elective courses to support the Early Years stream of the Bachelor of Education program and students in other programs across campus.

We strive to provide academic opportunities in partnership with Indigenous people, racialized people, people with inner city experience, as well as single parents, mature students, and newcomers. In addition to the preparation of early childhood educators and preservice teachers leading to provincial certification, programming at the University of Winnipeg provides additional foci on urban inner-city education, coalition building, and decolonial liberation work.

The successful candidate must have a doctorate degree, or be a doctoral degree candidate who has all but defended their thesis before the start date of the appointment. Doctoral studies should be in early childhood development, curriculum and teaching, with a solid research agenda. Certification in an approved early childhood teaching qualification such as an Early Childhood Educator or Early Years Teacher is preferred, as is experience working in an early childhood setting or community agency supporting young children, knowledge of child care administration, Indigenous education, and familiarity with supporting young children with learning needs in inclusive settings. The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to understanding and addressing systemic inequalities.

Evidence of engagement in post-secondary teaching including previous experience teaching at the post-secondary level is preferred. The successful candidate will be required to teach courses in-person and on-line, during evenings and weekends, and supervise field/clinical experiences in applied settings. Additional teaching responsibilities in the Faculty of Education may be assigned depending on area(s) of expertise. The successful candidate will have strong potential for acquiring and maintaining an active research program with the possibility of obtaining external research funding. The successful candidate is also expected to contribute to program, Faculty, University, and community service.

Subject to budgetary approval, the appointment will take effect on January 6, 2027, or as soon afterward as possible. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
