The Division of General Internal Medicine comprises of 30 full-time and 25 part-time General Internal Medicine specialists with a range of expertise. The General Internal Medicine inpatient team staffs 6 traditional Clinical Teaching Units, 3 non-traditional teaching teams, and 4 consultation services. We have a dedicated Obstetrical Medicine service as well as a Point of Care Ultrasound Service. The division supports academic work with a part-time research assistant, work-in-progress research rounds, and administrative support. We offer robust ambulatory care opportunities in various clinics aligned with the interests of a diverse academic GIM service such as perioperative medicine, general medicine, liver disease, vascular risk reduction, and obstetrical medicine. We are situated within the Department of Medicine which provides support for members with mentorship, research support, quality improvement methodology support, academic promotion support and a benefit plan.

The Ottawa Hospital is a 1445-bed tertiary-care hospital serving Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec at three main inpatient sites (Civic, General, Heart Institute) and one ambulatory centre (Riverside). The hospital provides approximately 67,450 inpatient admissions, 178,200 emergency visits and one million ambulatory care visits annually.

Ground-breaking medical research is conducted through The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI). We rank among the top 4 hospitals in Canada for Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) funded research and overall research funding. Over 2,300 researchers, trainees, and staff contribute to a highly productive research environment, generating more than 2,200 scientific publications annually, including many high-impact studies.

The Department receives approximately $60 million per year in external research funding and members publish approximately 1200 peer-reviewed publications annually.

The Faculty of Medicine is a nationally recognized leader in medical education and research, contributing significantly to the University of Ottawa’s standing among Canada’s top research-intensive universities. The University of Ottawa is the largest bilingual (English/French) university in the world, and the Faculty of Medicine is the first and largest bilingual medical school in Canada.

The City of Ottawa offers a vibrant, multicultural, and bilingual environment with access to diverse cultural, recreational, and outdoor activities, making it an excellent place to live and work.
