Full job description
Let’s build something that lasts — together.
At Catterall & Wright, we’ve spent over 60 years shaping Saskatchewan’s communities through practical municipal consulting that puts people first. Rooted in local knowledge and long-term relationships, we take pride in doing things the right way—delivering solutions that truly stand the test of time.
We are looking for an Intermediate Survey Technologist to join our Survey Group and support a wide range of municipal infrastructure, land development, construction, and boundary-related projects. This role is ideal for an experienced survey professional who thrives in the field, takes ownership of their work, and enjoys mentoring others while contributing to meaningful community projects across Saskatchewan.
This is a permanent, full-time role, Monday through Friday (40 hours per week).
The Opportunity
In this role, you’ll lead complex field survey assignments, support construction and legal survey activities, collaborate closely with engineering and project teams, and provide technical guidance to junior staff — all while continuing to strengthen your expertise in municipal and cadastral surveying practices.
What You’ll Do
Some of your key responsibilities include:
- Perform preliminary, topographic, construction layout, and record (as-built) surveys using GPS/GNSS, total station, level equipment, and UAV technology.
- Oversee and execute construction layout for municipal infrastructure projects, including water, sewer, roadways, and grading works.
- Conduct legal land surveys in accordance with The Land Surveyors Act and Regulations, including boundary surveys, subdivision surveys and right-of-way surveys.
- Collect precise measurements to support boundary re-establishment and subdivision-related deliverables.
- Interpret survey plans, legal descriptions, and design drawings to support field activities.
- Maintain accurate, complete, and defensible field notes and documentation.
- Process survey data using established control, coordinate systems, and quality control procedures.
- Prepare grade sheets and supporting documentation for municipal projects.
- Conduct site inspections to verify that construction aligns with approved drawings and specifications.
- Track and verify construction quantities to support contract administration and progress payments.
- Provide technical guidance to junior staff and contribute to the continuous improvement of field procedures.
- Communicate project status and coordinate effectively with project managers, contractors, and internal teams.
Working Conditions
- Primarily outdoor fieldwork with some office-based data processing.
- Exposure to varying weather conditions throughout the year.
- Travel outside Saskatoon required approximately 5% of the time, including occasional overnight stays.
- Frequent walking over uneven terrain, lifting equipment, hammering survey monuments, and working in active construction environments.
- Ability to lift or move up to 50 lbs on a regular basis.
What You Bring
You’ll be joining a team that values practical expertise and thoughtful collaboration. Here’s what will help you thrive and grow with us:
Education/Experience
- Must be authorized to work in Canada.
- Must have a valid Class 5 driver's license and a reliable personal vehicle, preferably a truck.
- Driver’s abstract and Criminal Record Check are required.
- Technical diploma in Geomatics, Civil Engineering Technology, or related municipal program.
- Typically 5+ years of progressive industry experience (7+ years in lieu of diploma).
- Preference given to individuals with a P.Tech. designation (or working toward).
Skills/Abilities
- Strong working knowledge of construction and municipal infrastructure surveying.
- Working knowledge of legal survey principles, boundary evidence, and cadastral field practices.
- Proficiency in Civil 3D and survey data processing workflows.
- Experience with GPS/GNSS, total stations, and UAV survey technology.
- Ability to interpret design drawings, specifications, and survey plans.
- Strong understanding of coordinate systems and survey control.
- Excellent documentation practices and attention to detail.
- Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently and prioritize effectively.
- Practical, solution-oriented mindset aligned with constructible and cost-effective outcomes.
- Clear and professional communication skills with contractors, clients, and internal teams.
We’re excited to welcome someone who shares our commitment to accuracy, teamwork, and delivering survey work that supports strong, lasting infrastructure.
