BUILD YOUR CAREER WITH BOSTON EARTHWORKS LTD.

Survey & Project Technician — Civil Construction | Kelowna and Surrounding Areas

Boston Earthworks LTD. is a growing civil excavation company specializing in civil utility and earthwork projects throughout the Okanagan and surrounding areas. With a strong foundation of expertise and a dedicated workforce, we take pride in exceeding client expectations on every project.

As we continue to grow, we are seeking a skilled and proactive Survey & Project Technician to support our active project portfolio and contribute to our continued success in the field.

Position Overview

The Survey & Project Technician is a hands-on field role responsible for keeping Boston's project sites accurate, organized, and well documented. The technician owns survey layout, as-built capture, utility locating, drone documentation, and the technical records that support billing, change orders, and future work. The role is field-first and works in close coordination with crews on:

· Construction survey layout (cut/fill, grades, utility layout, manhole and catch basin layout, property line layout)

· As-built data collection on installed utilities, structures, and grades

· Onsite utility locating where third-party locators have not physically marked

· Drone documentation of site progress, milestones, and conditions

· Quantity verification, stockpile and volume calculations, and project record management

· New project mobilization: drawings, control, server folders, locate and drone setup

All work is performed in accordance with MMCD standards and applicable municipal bylaws.

This position reports directly to the Project Manager, with executive oversight from the Managing Director.

Why Join Boston Earthworks?

· Full-time, permanent employment with a stable, growing company

· Consistent work schedule: 8–10 hours per day, 5 days per week

· Comprehensive benefits package (Group Medical, Extended Health, Dental) following the 90-day probationary period

· Company-paid travel allowance policy for extended travel to job sites

· Access to training and continuing-education opportunities

· Clear pathway for career advancement within the company

· Company-organized team events that foster a collaborative work environment

Roles and Responsibilities

· Survey & layout. Set construction layout (cut/fill, grade, utility, structures) using company GPS and field equipment. Confirm drawings, control, offsets, and elevations before layout proceeds.

· As-built documentation. Capture as-built data — pipe inverts, manhole and catch basin locations, hydrants, valves, bends, services, and utility crossings — before work is covered.

· Utility locating. Perform onsite locates with company equipment when third-party locators have not physically marked. Coordinate with BC One Call where statutory or owner notification applies.

· Drone documentation. Capture progress photos and video at meaningful milestones and conditions; upload media promptly to the project server with clear naming.

· Project setup. Mobilize new projects: confirm drawings and revisions, verify control and benchmarks, create project server folders, load equipment files, prepare locates and drone, coordinate with the project team.

· Quantity and record support. Verify quantities, support stockpile and volume calculations, maintain digital file standards, and contribute to estimating and change-order documentation.

· Daily reporting. Send a clear daily end-of-day report to the Project Manager covering work completed, layouts captured, as-builts, locates, drone documentation, and tomorrow's priorities.

· Equipment care. Treat survey and technical equipment as precision equipment — clean, charge, secure, and maintain GPS, locate, and drone gear daily.

· Department development. Help document workflows, improve file structures, draft SOPs, and build a scalable survey and project support function as the company grows.

Equipment You'll Use

Boston provides a modern field equipment kit, including:

· Topcon GPS equipment (rover, controller, base, rods, tripod, radios)

· Utility locating equipment

· DJI drone for documentation

· Milwaukee Packout storage system for organized field deployment

· Standard layout consumables (paint, lath, stakes, hubs, ribbon, flagging, whiskers)

Prior experience with construction GPS systems is required. Familiarity with utility locating, drone, and Packout systems is considered an asset — training is provided for company-specific equipment.

Requirements

· Demonstrated experience on civil construction sites (subdivisions, road works, underground utilities, or municipal civil work)

· Prior experience with GPS / construction survey equipment (Topcon or comparable preferred)

· Working knowledge of process flows for civil utility and earthworks construction

· Strong ability to read and interpret civil project drawings, grades, and specifications

· Attention to detail with a focus on accuracy and quality

· Self-directed work habits — comfortable identifying the next productive task and moving on it without prompting

· Positive attitude and willingness to support the field crew as an internal service provider

· Excellent written and verbal communication skills

· Efficient, punctual, and able to perform under pressure and against tight deadlines

· Valid driver's licence with a clean driver's abstract

· Willingness to travel to job sites throughout the Okanagan region

Considered an Asset

· Diploma or certificate in geomatics, survey technology, or civil engineering technology

· Certified Survey Technician (CST) or equivalent designation

· AutoCAD or Civil 3D exposure

· RPAS Pilot Certificate – Basic Operations (drone)

· Knowledge of MMCD standards and municipal bylaws applicable to civil construction

· Prior experience working in the Okanagan region

Working Conditions

This is an outdoor, physically active role performed on active construction sites in all seasons. The Technician is expected to be on-site daily, on their feet for extended periods, and capable of working in varying weather conditions typical to the Okanagan region. Some equipment carrying and field-data setup is part of the daily routine.

Compensation

· Hourly wage: $38 - $42 commensurate with experience

· 90-day probationary period

· Benefits enrolment following successful completion of probation

· Company travel allowance policy
