Job Description:
POSITION PURPOSE SUMMARY:
The Children & Youth Outreach Worker is responsible for developing, leading, and growing engaging, Christ-centered programs for children and youth in the St. Albert community. This role focuses on relational ministry through outreach initiatives, including the Bunker Youth Drop-In and children’s programming, creating safe, welcoming environments where young people can build community, experience belonging, and encounter the love of Jesus.
The Bunker Youth Drop-In Center Programming
- Plan, organize, and lead weekly Bunker Youth Drop-In programs.
- Create a safe, inclusive, and engaging space for youth (ages approximately 11–17).
- Build meaningful relationships with youth through consistent presence and mentorship.
- Provide informal support, guidance, and referrals when appropriate.
- Incorporate faith-based elements including devotionals, conversations, and prayer in a relational and accessible way.
- Run the Youth Alpha program within local schools.
- Develop and lead children’s outreach programs including Baby Song and Mini Chiefs.
- Plan activities including games, crafts, teaching, and faith formation.
- Create environments that are fun, structured, and rooted in biblical values.
- Support seasonal programs such as summer day camps and holiday events.
- Build relationships with families, schools, and community partners.
- Promote programs within the community to increase participation.
- Identify outreach opportunities to connect with youth and families.
- Recruit, supervise, orientate, support, and train volunteer leaders for youth programs in partnership with the Corps Officer.
- May develop strategies and recommendations for volunteer development.
- Deal with volunteer complaints and incident reports.
- Prepare, post, and maintain all volunteer schedules for those supervised in accordance with operational requirements ensuring adequate coverage for all program functions.
- Ensure completion of police checks for volunteers, statement of applicant for work with children and youth forms, and online abuse prevention training.
- Prepare and maintain written records/logs of activities, including activity reports and statistical information.
- Design and draft promotional material that highlights various programs provided by The Salvation Army St. Albert Corps & Community Center subject to supervisory approval.
- May participate in the development and implementation of policies and procedures for the Youth Programs.
- Communicate in an empathetic manner with families, and staff.
- Inform the Corps Officer and Community Ministries Officer regarding any concerns or issues in a timely manner.
- Maintain program storage areas (e.g., updating, safety, organizing, etc.).
- Seek out continual education in food safety and health standards, including maintaining Safe Food Handling Certification.
- Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
Perform other work-related duties as required.
- Internal relationships:
o Attend/participate in staff meetings as required.
o Consult and work effectively, and in conjunction with local and program leaders.
- External relationships:
o Families and community partners.
- This position reports directly to the Corps Officer and Community Ministries Officer.
- The incumbent performs team lead/working supervisor responsibilities.
- The incumbent provides in-scope supervision to youth volunteer leaders within established guidelines.
- This role is responsible for maintaining current curriculum and program equipment – minor material responsibility level.
- Regular responsibility for minor financial matters and for wise use of own resources.
- May be authorized to handle small amounts of cash.
- Provide little input into the departmental budget.
- Monitor the financial performance accordingly.
- This is a permanent full-time position.
- Working environment is typically in the office in generally agreeable conditions.
- Ability to lift/move up to 20 lbs. or up to 39 lbs. with assistance.
- This job requires reaching, bending, and stooping frequently, working in a sitting, and standing position for periods of time.
- Travel is associated with this position (10%). i.e., on occasion pick-up supplies, attend community meetings.
Normal hours of work: The working conditions are such that to meet the operational needs of the job, flexibility in scheduling is required as it relates to hours of work and work schedule. It is expected that between 9 to 12 hours per week would be spent as weekday office hours, with the remainder of the time being used to meet with youth at regular events or special events/appointments. Schedule will include evenings and weekends. Includes a ½-hour unpaid meal break where applicable.

Education, Qualifications and Certifications:
- Post-secondary education in ministry, social work, education, or a related field is preferred.
- Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.
- Minimum of two (2) years of prior related experience working with youth and youth programming.
- Understanding of children and youth, and associated needs.
- Knowledge and understanding of working with the marginalized.
- Respect and understanding in working with different cultures and ethnicities.
- Experience in program creation and implementation an asset
- Proficiency with social media and Microsoft Office, Word, PowerPoint, and Google Workspace.
- Attention to detail, problem solving and analytical skills.
- Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics and a balanced sense of fairness and flexibility.
- Ability to work collaboratively and participate as an active team member in a cooperative team-oriented atmosphere.
- Exhibit good listening skills, have strong oral/written communication skills.
- Self-motivated/disciplined.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and adaptability.
- Attentive listening skills for the purpose of supervision, coaching, and conflict resolution.
- Valid Alberta Class “5” Driver’s License; personal vehicle and insurance, and a current copy of a Driver’s abstract that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.
- Provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required. The screening is secured either through the national Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) or through a local police detachment.
- Screening through The Salvation Army Abuse Registry.
- Understand, support and be able to communicate and model the Mission, Values, Doctrines, and policies of The Salvation Army in Canada.
- Develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
This is a Full-Time position.
Weekly scheduled hours: 35
