Full job description

Build the operating engine behind a growing Edmonton civil construction company.

Are you a civil construction leader who can see the big picture - and still knows what is happening in the field?

Do you know how to turn strategy into clear priorities, accountable teams, profitable projects, and reliable execution?

Are you ready for a senior leadership role where you can shape how a growing, family-owned contractor operates for the long term?

BREYCON Construction is looking for a hands-on (paving expertise is an asset) Director of Operations to oversee and optimize the company's operational functions. Reporting directly to the President, you will have meaningful influence over day-to-day decisions, strategic execution, project delivery, people leadership, financial performance, client relationships, and the systems that support continued growth.

The Opportunity

This is a senior leadership role for someone who enjoys operating where strategy meets the job site. You will lead across BREYCON's civil construction divisions, mentor Project Managers and operational leaders, and serve as a senior liaison with clients, municipalities, developers, consultants, government agencies, and industry partners.

You will lead five direct reports, including roles such as Project Managers, Estimators, Superintendents, and the Safety Officer. The mandate is broad: create structure, improve performance, solve operational problems, protect margins, strengthen accountability, and help BREYCON scale without losing its commitment to safety, integrity, quality, schedule, or budget.

What You'll OwnOperational Leadership & Execution

· Lead and coordinate operations across paving, underground services, and maintenance.

· Build and maintain operational standards, workflows, performance metrics, processes, and best practices across divisions.

· Make timely operational decisions in complex or ambiguous situations and remove barriers that affect execution.

· Create clear accountability for managers, superintendents, and crew leads while promoting continuous improvement and Lean thinking.

Projects, Field Operations & Controls

· Maintain an active field presence through regular job-site visits and inspections.

· Review project progress, schedules, safety practices, workmanship, risks, and performance - and ensure follow-up actions are completed.

· Oversee scheduling processes and contractual milestones; chair key project meetings and drive accountability.

· Support field teams in resolving logistical and operational issues while ensuring execution meets company standards and client expectations.

Financial Performance, Estimating & Growth

· Understand project and divisional profitability by monitoring costs, margins, productivity, labour needs, workloads, and equipment utilization.

· Partner with Finance and Estimating to improve operational visibility, resource planning, bidding, risk assessment, contract negotiations, and job-start planning.

· Contribute to business development, market growth, and key client relationships across the construction and engineering community.

People, Safety & Assets

· Recruit, onboard, coach, support, and develop Project Managers, Superintendents, and operational personnel.

· Build a high-performance culture grounded in collaboration, accountability, teamwork, safety, and continuous improvement.

· Address performance challenges constructively; support capital planning, equipment utilization, and preventive maintenance programs.

About You

You are an experienced civil construction operator who earns credibility in both the office and the field. You can lead through people, understand the financial consequences of operational decisions, and stay composed when priorities shift or risk is high. You are comfortable creating structure where it is needed, challenging the status quo, and holding teams accountable without losing collaboration.

· 10+ years of experience in the civil construction industry (paving expertise is an asset).

· 5+ years of leadership experience, preferably in a senior operational role.

· Bachelor's degree or diploma in a relevant construction discipline, Operations Management, Business Administration, or a related/equivalent field.

· Demonstrated success leading and improving complex construction operations.

· Strong understanding of project delivery, financial performance, supply chain, procurement, logistics, and equipment-intensive operations.

· Excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational, and decision-making skills, with the ability to influence at all levels.

· Strong judgment in complex, ambiguous, and high-risk environments, including risk identification, conflict resolution, and mitigation.

· Working knowledge of relevant construction regulations, safety standards, and compliance requirements.

Why BREYCON?

BREYCON believes strong performance is built by people who are supported, trusted, and able to build a long-term career. In addition to a competitive executive compensation package, the company places real emphasis on family, development, safety, and work-life balance.

· $150,000-$170,000 annual base salary, plus an annual performance bonus of up to $20,000.

· Comprehensive benefits package, plus an additional Health Spending Account allowance.

· Two-week Christmas shutdown in addition to regular vacation entitlement.

· All long weekends off throughout the year, with additional days off often provided during slower seasons so employees can spend time with family and friends.

· Encouraged time off during slower winter months to support work-life balance.

· Paid career development and approved training; the winter season is used to advance technical, professional, and personal development.

· Participation in industry associations and networking opportunities, including ECA, BOMA, and ARHCA.

· Annual company and staff events that strengthen morale, relationships, and workplace culture.

· Family-owned, people-first workplace that prioritizes and accommodates employees' work-life balance.

· Safety-first environment supported by a full-time Safety Officer, comprehensive HSE policies and programs, COR certification, and additional safety accreditations.

· Modern technology and continuous improvement, with an emphasis on staying current with construction technologies, tools, and better ways of working.

· Strong team environment and collaborative leadership.

· Growing company with long-term career opportunities and recognition for loyalty, dedication, and long-term commitment.

· Community involvement and industry leadership, including support for local charities and employees' communities, teams, and organizations.

About BREYCON

BREYCON Construction is a growing, Edmonton-based full-scope civil general contractor specializing in asphalt paving. Formerly St Albert Parking Lot Maintenance (SAPLM), established in 1986, BREYCON has grown rapidly since 2016 and remains proudly family-owned and locally operated.

BREYCON delivers end-to-end project execution - from planning, site preparation, and base construction through paving, concrete, underground infrastructure, restoration, and seasonal maintenance. Its clients include developers, Alberta municipalities, commercial and industrial organizations, property managers, school boards, private owners, and general contractors.

Safety - Integrity - Quality

Those values are more than words. BREYCON combines site-specific safety practices, routine quality control, clear communication, reliable equipment, and experienced people to deliver high-quality work while protecting schedule and budget commitments.

What to Expect

This role combines office-based leadership with frequent job-site presence. Civil construction is seasonal and deadline-driven, so the Director of Operations must be comfortable with extended hours, including some evenings and weekends during peak construction seasons and critical project phases. BREYCON balances those peak-season demands with meaningful time off and flexibility during slower periods.
