Description
The Office of Post Graduate Medical Education in the Cumming School of Medicine is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Learning Education Resource Specialist.
The Office of Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME), Cumming School of Medicine, is accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons (RCPSC) and the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC). It oversees the education and training of 1250+ medical residents, fellows, international trainees, and visiting elective residents in 65 specialty and subspecialty residency programs in a variety of clinical and academic settings situated in five Calgary hospitals with collaborative relationships in metro and rural settings. Residency training programs vary in length from two to eight years, have independent education curricula, and are separately accredited according to the Royal College and College of Family Medicine mandated requirements.
This position reports to the PGME Manager, Office Administration.
This is a senior position and will be primarily responsible for providing consultation to and acting as a resource for PGME trainees and residency programs with respect to the planning, development, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of customized educational supports and/or remedial activities for learners in academic difficulty. The incumbent will develop specialized knowledge of specific resources, both internally and externally, and play a key role in negotiating remediation and probation contracts required when PGME learners are in academic difficulty.
This position will support trainees requiring psychoeducational assessments, communication coaching, and formal requests for Learner Accommodation. The incumbent will liaise with the PGME Accommodations Assessment Committee and the PGME Accommodations Therapist as required.
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
- Postgraduate Medical Education involves close linkages between the Office of PGME and the discipline specific residency training programs. The Learning and Education Resource Specialist will ensure that activities are consistent with the standards and guidelines established by the two certifying and accrediting bodies for postgraduate medical education: The College of Family Physicians of Canada and The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and with PGME and Faculty of Medicine specific requirements
- The Learning and Education Resource Specialist is accountable for providing accurate and timely advice to the Associate Dean, PGME Committee on continuing and emergent issues with respect to remediation, and has a specific focus on resolving remediation issues and leading initiatives with positive impact
- Accountabilities include consulting, coordinating and administering the required processes with respect to remedial programs, the timely collection and analysis of data, report writing, and development of related policies and procedures to improve operational effectiveness; and develops, communicates and implements action plans appropriate to special projects
- Involved in long range planning and strategic planning for PGME
- Liaising with outside agencies such as the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Alberta, Alberta Medical Association PFSP program, Alberta International Medical Graduate Program
Qualifications / Requirements:
- The candidate is a senior professional with a proven track record in high functionality, resilience, strategic thinking, plan development and implementation, and with a demonstrated ability to provide significant support and guidance for learners and faculty managing difficult circumstances. They have developed an expert knowledge working in a multi-faced organization and is an outstanding writer and communicator providing strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills in order to deal effectively with complex tasks and issues. Expertise in documenting, synthesizing ideas with clarity and developing solutions appropriate to the needs of special circumstances is required
- Masters level training with a minimum of five years experience in medical education, education or social sciences
- Experience working in a university environment or health care organization
- Knowledge of postgraduate medical education in Canada
- Knowledge of assessment processes for residency education
- Knowledge of CanMEDS
- Experience working collaboratively with a broad range of medical educators, medical learners and/ or health care professionals
- Strong planning and organizational skills
- Familiarity in conducting research in order to identify suitable resources
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
- Abilities in writing and policy development
- Ability to nurture relationships and liaise with multiple stakeholders in many different environments
- Skilled in diplomacy, confidential information management and conflict resolution
- Excellent communication skills, both written and oral
- Excellent negotiation skills
- Knowledge and experience in working with computer systems and software including Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint
