The Department of Biochemistry and Medical Genetics (BMG), School of Biomedical Sciences, Max Rady College of Medicine, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences (RFHS)(https://umanitoba.ca/medicine/department-biochemistry-and-medical-genetics ) invites applications for a full-time probationary position at the rank of Instructor I or II, commencing February 1st, 2027, or on a mutually agreed upon date. Instructor I appointments normally require a Master’s degree or its equivalent and Instructor II appointments normally require a Master’s degree or its equivalent and 5 or more years’ experience in a University or equivalent position. Salary and rank will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
We are seeking an enthusiastic educator who enjoys working with students, values collaborative teaching, and is committed to delivering an engaging, inclusive, and evidence-informed learning experience. The successful candidate will join a collegial department with a strong commitment to excellence in undergraduate and graduate education. They will play a key role in shaping genetics and biochemistry education across multiple health science and science programs while contributing to ongoing innovation in curriculum design and pedagogy.
Preference will be given to individuals who:
- hold a Master’s and or PhD degree in Genetics, Biochemistry or a related discipline,
- have substantial post-secondary teaching experience, particularly in medical genetics and/or biochemistry; including evidence of effective teaching, curriculum development, student mentorship, or educational innovation,
- be able to thrive in a collaborative, interdisciplinary environment.
The appointee’s teaching responsibilities will focus primarily on genetic courses, including those offered by the Bachelor of Health Sciences (BHSc) program and undergraduate and graduate courses taught by BMG in the RFHS and in the Faculty of Science. Preference will be given to those applicants who also are able to teach biochemistry courses. Duties will primarily include teaching, student assessment, including live lecture, on-line and distance delivery formats, course coordination, curriculum design and development, educational innovation and the continuous improvement of teaching and learning. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to departmental, faculty, university, and professional service activities, which may consist of committee work, leadership and other service to the profession, community and home units of the University of Manitoba (e.g., BMG, School of Biomedical Sciences, Max Rady College of Medicine).
The RFHS is a major center of interdisciplinary health sciences education and research in Canada, offering a full range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs in biomedical sciences and health professions. BMG currently has 19 full-time faculty and has a rich history of excellence in research and education in biochemistry and medical genetics. BMG offers graduate education through its MSc and PhD programs, including the MSc in Genetic Counselling Program and is committed to providing high quality programming in the RFHS. BMG also contributes to undergraduate programming in the Faculty of Science (BSc) and the RFHS BHSc curriculum.
The RFHS is committed to the social justice principles of equity, access & participation and to promoting opportunities in hiring, promotion and tenure (where applicable) for systemically marginalized groups who have been excluded from full participation at the University and the larger community including Indigenous Peoples, Black, racially marginalized communities, disabled persons and those who identify as 2SLGBTQIA+ (Two Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, questioning, intersex, asexual and other diverse sexual identities).
An inclusive, open and diverse community is essential to excellence and fosters voices that have been ignored or discouraged. To address the RFHS commitment to equity, access and participation, and in recognition of the underrepresentation of members of historically and currently excluded groups, we take proactive measures including implicit bias training for all hiring panels. We strive for diversity and cultural safety throughout the hiring process (hiring panels, short-list of candidates, interviews). The University acknowledges the potential impact that Career Interruptions and Personal Circumstances can have on an applicant's record of research achievement. Measures will be taken to ensure that these leaves will be taken into careful consideration during the evaluation process.
We encourage you to self-identity aspects of your identity that position you to bring currently under-represented viewpoints, expertise and forms of excellence to this role.
All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadian citizens and permanent residents will be given priority. Review of applications will begin September 25th, 2026, and will continue until the position is filled.
Interested applicants should submit, preferably as a single PDF, the following materials:
- Cover letter explaining your interest in the position.
- Curriculum vitae highlighting teaching experience, educational leadership, scholarly activities, and other relevant qualifications.
- Description of your teaching philosophy and interests in pedagogical development (max 2 pages)
- Personal statement describing your positionality and demonstrated commitment and approach to issues pertaining to anti-racism and social justice (including principles of equity, access and participation) in academia (max 2 pages).
- Contact information for three references that will be contacted for applicants who are invited for interviews.
