Full job description
6ixDesign Inc. is a multidisciplinary architecture and engineering practice based in Toronto. We work across low-rise and mid-rise residential, multiplex, commercial, mixed-use, and institutional projects, carrying them from early feasibility through permit, tender, and construction. What sets us apart is structural: architecture and engineering sit under one roof, so coordination happens down the hall instead of across three firms and a two-week email chain. As our project volume grows, we are looking for people who want real responsibility and the room to use it.
Why 6ixDesign?
Growth: We are expanding our architectural department, and this role sits at the centre of that. Your judgment will shape how our projects get delivered and how the team around you develops.
Integrated Practice: Our architectural and engineering teams share drawings and resolve issues internally. You will spend less time chasing consultants and more time solving the actual problem.
Ownership: We are a flat studio with short lines to the principals. Decisions get made quickly, and the people closest to the work are the ones making them.
Beautiful Workspace: Our office is designed the way we design for our clients. It is a space built to support focused, collaborative work.
Competitive Salary: We recognize and reward the value that each team member brings to the table. Our compensation packages reflect our dedication to attracting and retaining strong people.
Job Description: As Architectural Manager, you will lead multiple architectural projects and a team of architectural staff while staying close to the drawings. This is a hands-on management role. You will be running projects, reviewing sets, sitting in coordination meetings, and making technical calls. If you are looking for a purely oversight position with no drawing review, this is not it. If you want the authority to shape how projects get delivered while still doing the technical work you are good at, it is. You will report directly to the principals and work daily with our internal engineering teams, clients, consultants, contractors, and municipal reviewers.
Key Responsibilities:
Project Leadership: Lead multiple architectural projects from feasibility and schematic design through design development, permit submission, construction documentation, tender, and construction administration.
Scope and Code Review: Review project scope, zoning, Ontario Building Code requirements, and technical constraints at the outset, and set the strategy for how each project gets delivered.
Team Management: Assign tasks and oversee the work of architectural technologists, designers, and interns, balancing workload against deadlines and capability.
Document Review: Review drawings, specifications, reports, and permit packages for accuracy, coordination, and completeness before they leave the office.
Consultant Coordination: Review and coordinate architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, civil, and landscape drawings, and work directly with clients, consultants, contractors, municipalities, and our in-house engineering teams.
Schedule and Budget Control: Monitor project schedules, budgets, milestones, risks, and outstanding decisions, and flag problems before they become expensive.
Meeting Leadership: Lead internal project meetings and consultant coordination meetings, setting the agenda and closing out action items.
Proposals and Resourcing: Support proposal preparation, project planning, fee allocation, and resource management across the architectural team.
Quality and Standards: Maintain design quality, technical standards, and documentation consistency across the portfolio.
Issue Resolution: Resolve technical, design, permitting, and construction-related issues as they arise, and make the call when a decision is needed.
Construction Administration: Conduct or coordinate site reviews and respond to RFIs, shop drawings, and change requests.
Mentorship: Mentor team members and help them develop technically and professionally.
Practice Development: Improve internal processes, templates, QA procedures, and drawing production standards, and contribute to the growth and culture of the architectural department.
Must Have Qualifications:
Approximately 6 to 10 years of architectural experience.
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Architecture from a recognized, accredited university.
Strong working knowledge of the Ontario Building Code, municipal zoning by-laws, applicable standards, permitting processes, and construction requirements.
Demonstrated experience managing low-rise and mid-rise residential, multiplex, commercial, mixed-use, or institutional projects.
Proven ability to carry projects through every phase, from feasibility and schematic design to design development, permit, construction documents, tender, and construction administration.
Solid technical grounding in building systems, assemblies, detailing, code compliance, accessibility, life safety, and consultant coordination.
Experience reviewing and coordinating architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, civil, and landscape drawings.
Experience managing project schedules, deliverables, budgets, quality control, and client expectations.
Experience mentoring or supervising architectural technologists, designers, interns, or junior staff.
Strong proficiency in Revit, AutoCAD, Bluebeam, Microsoft Office, and project management platforms.
Familiarity with BIM standards, drawing production workflows, and quality assurance procedures.
Preferred Qualifications:
OAA membership, Intern Architect status, or eligibility to pursue licensure.
BCIN qualifications in relevant categories.
Experience with Toronto and GTA municipal approvals processes.
Experience working alongside in-house or closely integrated engineering teams.
Exposure to purpose-built rental, missing-middle, or multiplex housing typologies.
Familiarity with Microsoft Project or comparable scheduling software.
Leadership and Personal Qualities:
- Detail-oriented: You catch the coordination conflict on the section before it reaches the site.
- Proactive: You raise the issue early rather than reporting it after the fact.
- Accountable: You own project outcomes, including the parts that went sideways.
- Decisive: You are comfortable making technical calls with incomplete information and standing behind them.
- Collaborative: You work well with engineers, consultants, and contractors, and you would rather solve the problem than win the email.
- Composed: You manage competing deadlines and pressure without losing accuracy or perspective.
What We Offer:
Genuine project leadership and decision-making authority from the start.
A direct working relationship with the principals, with no layers to push through.
A varied portfolio across residential, multiplex, mixed-use, commercial, and institutional work.
Integrated in-house engineering support on every project.
Competitive compensation aligned with experience.
Paid vacation and statutory holidays.
Support for professional development, licensure, and continuing education.
A clear path to grow with the firm as the architectural department expands.
How to Apply: Please send your resume and a portfolio (PDF, maximum 10 MB) to careers@6ixgroup.ca with the subject line “Architectural Manager – Your Name.” In your email, include a short note covering two or three projects you have led and your specific role on each, your current status regarding OAA licensure or BCIN qualifications, and your availability to start. We review applications on a rolling basis and will contact shortlisted candidates directly. We appreciate every application, though we are only able to respond to those selected for an interview.
Join our team as an Architectural Manager and take ownership of projects that shape how Toronto gets built. This role offers real leadership, technical depth, and the chance to grow alongside a practice that is expanding on the strength of its work.
6ixDesign Inc. is an equal-opportunity employer. We are committed to building a team that reflects the communities we design for, and we welcome applications from all qualified candidates regardless of race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, age, disability, or any other protected ground. Accommodations are available on request at any stage of the recruitment process.
