The Role

GrizzlyTrek is seeking one experienced Hydrovac Operator to join our valued client's team in Fort McMurray, Alberta. This is a full-time contract position on a multi-year project, working a 14 days on, 7 days off rotation with camp accommodations provided.
The successful candidate will operate hydrovac trucks to safely excavate and expose underground utilities while following all safety protocols and regulations. This role calls for strong mechanical aptitude, close attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively across a range of field conditions. Hydrovac experience is mandatory; applications without it will not be considered.

What You'll Do

  • Perform hydrovac excavation safely around underground utilities, pipelines, oil and gas infrastructure, cables, and in sloughing conditions
  • Conduct pre-trip inspections and equipment checks in accordance with company procedures
  • Use bonding and grounding equipment appropriately and consistently
  • Adhere to all applicable safety standards, including Alberta OH&S regulations and site SOPs
  • Accurately complete and submit daily reports, inspections, and other required documentation
  • Read and interpret utility locates, drawings, and schematics to ensure safe and precise excavation
  • Represent the company professionally on site and in all client interactions
  • Support and mentor less experienced team members, including operators and swampers
  • Collaborate with coworkers, supervisors, and clients to ensure safe and efficient site operations
  • Perform basic preventative maintenance and troubleshooting of hydrovac units
  • Maintain cleanliness, readiness, and safety of tools, equipment, hydrovac units, and vehicles
  • Set up work areas with appropriate safety measures and address potential hazards
  • Attend safety meetings and uphold a safety-first culture for everyone on site

What You Bring

  • 3 years of relevant experience, including at least 2 years operating hydrovac equipment in the field
  • Experience in the utility or construction industry
  • Valid Class 1 or Class 3 driver's license with a clean driver's abstract
  • Experience operating tri-drive vehicles and manual transmissions
  • Ability to interpret utility locates and read technical schematics
  • Familiarity with bonding, grounding, confined space entry protocols, and sloughing
  • Strong safety focus and knowledge of applicable regulations
  • Capable of working independently under physically demanding conditions
  • Mechanical aptitude for minor repairs and maintenance
  • Experience mentoring junior operators or working as part of a field operations team
  • Able to lift, push, and pull 50+ pounds with the physical stamina for manual labour in varying weather conditions
