The Opportunity

We have two opportunities for Response and Recovery Workers to join our team at CUPS. Working hours fall Monday to Friday between 8:00 to 4:00, and will be full-time.

The Response & Recovery Worker at CUPS is responsible for welcoming individuals to CUPS by creating a caring, dignified, and trauma-informed experience for all clients. In this role, your primary responsibility is to provide a safe and supportive environment for individuals accessing services and resources at CUPS. Your duties will include responding to suspected drug poisonings and medical emergencies outside of the CUPS building and within a designated First Aid Response area around our building. Your purpose is to ensure that a client's needs are assessed and met appropriately while engaging individuals who are ready to explore steps toward recovery services at CUPS or within the community.

You will work efficiently with clients with complex concerns to identify the most pressing needs and provide high quality and accurate guidance and connection to the best resources available, both internally and externally. You will ensure that interested individuals connect to internal team members where appropriate to provide a warm handoff to increase service efficiency and positive client experience.

Location: Onsite, CUPS - 1001 10 Ave SW, Calgary

Reports to: Manager, Coordinated Care

Contract type: Temporary 1-year term

Schedule: Monday to Friday 8:00am -4:00pm

Starting hourly rate: $24.35 to $25.32

Key Responsibilities

• Provide short-term services to clients with straightforward resource/referral requests, while connecting clients with longer term/complex service needs to the appropriate support worker
• Monitor client safety and wellbeing, including withdrawal symptoms, possible drug poisoning, and immediate need inside and outside the building
• Respond to drug poisonings and provide first aid and naloxone administration according to assessment and withing CUPS Policy and Procedure
• Prioritize outside surveillance, wellness checks and engagement with individuals when people are present; otherwise, an active presence in Triage 1 area, monitor common areas and support wellness checks
• Accurately enter all required response interventions and actions taken to support engagement and referrals
• Remain up to date on internal changes to programs, services and personnel to ensure accurate care plan development and warm hand-offs of clients to colleagues
• Maintain a calm, welcoming environment
• Deescalate, answer questions and support clients making connections at CUPS
• Develop warm and trauma-informed relationships with CUPS clients, creating consistency in client experience

Employment Requirements

• 1-2 years of relevant work experience as an asset, preferably within the addictions and mental health field and/or the homeless serving system of care.
• Experience working in distress and/or high-stress situations is an asset, which may include emergency and first aid response.
• Resourcefulness and knowledge of community resources and social support systems.
• Demonstrated experience providing first point of contact service to diverse variety of clients who may be experiencing mental health, addiction, poverty & trauma concerns

What You Bring

• This position may include driving clients within the city limits, within regular working hours. The successful candidate must hold a valid Class 5 Driver’s License and a clean Driver’s Abstract. Proof of both is required.
• Current First Aid and Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
• Training, experience and confidence in de-escalation considered an asset

Work Conditions

• Exposure to trauma and emotionally complex cases.
• May be exposed to infectious waste, diseases, conditions, etc.
• Manual dexterity required to use desktop computer and peripherals.
• Intermittent physical activity including walking, standing, sitting, and lifting (minimum 35lbs)
