The Opportunity
As a Data Engineer Lead, this position drives the performance, reliability, and strategic value of Alberta Innovates' enterprise data platform. The role leads the architecture and advancement of the Microsoft Fabric platform, enabling high-quality, trusted, and governed data that powers analytics, reporting, and AI initiatives across the organization. By designing scalable data structures, orchestrating complex integrations across core systems, and applying expert judgement to resolve engineering challenges, the role directly influences data-driven decision-making, organizational efficiency, and the success of enterprise digital modernization efforts.

Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for duties that will include:
Data Platform Fabric Engineering
  • Lead the design, configuration, development, and ongoing enhancement of Microsoft Fabric as the organization's unified data platform.
  • Architect and implement scalable Lakehouse structures, ingestion frameworks, and governance components to support organizational growth.
  • Develop reliable data pipelines and processing layers for analytics, reporting, and AI workloads.
  • Ensure alignment with enterprise architecture, data governance, security, and compliance standards.
  • Lead the transition toward "Data as Code," implementing robust CI/CD pipelines and automation where applicable.
Enterprise Data Integration
  • Oversee and develop complex integration patterns using Microsoft Fabric and Azure tools to orchestrate event-driven data flows across enterprise systems.
  • Ensure Fabric data is updated and synchronized frequently.
  • Ensure Gold datasets maintain established data quality standards.
  • Establish ingestion standards and APIs for operational and program data across business units.
  • Implement robust orchestration for end-to-end data flows, including metadata management and lineage.
Governance, Quality, and Standards
  • Commit to established data quality and data governance standards on critical datasets.
  • Contribute to data governance structures, including cataloging, classification, quality, and access frameworks.
  • Define and enforce data engineering practices and operational standards.
  • Monitor data quality and coordinate remediation across teams.
Qualifications and Skills
Required
  • Diploma in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related technical discipline.
  • Minimum 7 years of directly relevant data engineering experience.
  • Fabric Analytics Engineer Associate.
  • Power BI Data Analyst Associate.
  • Azure Database Administrator Associate.
  • Azure AI Engineer Associate.
  • Azure Data Engineer Associate.
  • Proven experience implementing and developing in Microsoft Fabric, Azure Synapse, Databricks, or similar technologies.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Fabric (Data Factory, OneLake, KQL, Data Engineering workloads).
  • Understanding of Lakehouse architecture, ETL/ELT patterns, and MLOps/DevOps practices.
