Canada West Veterinary Specialists (CWVS), a privately owned and operated, multi-disciplinary emergency and specialty hospital is looking for an exceptional Veterinary Technician/Technologist to join our Internal Medicine department.

The first veterinary specialty hospital in Metro Vancouver, CWVS is a state-of-the-art Level VECCS level 1 and VetCOT certified facility. We have 30+ veterinarians in the following disciplines: emergency and critical care, surgery, neurology, radiology, internal medicine, and oncology. In addition to a rehabilitation department, 6 ORs, 2 isolation wards, and a newly redesigned ER, ICU, and Wards, we are equipped with 2 digital radiology suites, a new CT, and a 1.5T MRI.

This position is responsible primarily for Internal Medicine patient care including taking radiographs, preparing patients for procedures, following treatment plans, dispensing and administering drugs, monitoring vital signs and overall patient assessment. Communication with clients and referring family veterinarians is an integral part of this role. Both client communication and hands-on patient care are conducted under the direct supervision of the Internal Medicine specialist.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Must develop a thorough understanding of all procedures and protocols within the Internal Medicine service as well as the ability to use all equipment safely and effectively
  • Must have or be able to develop competency in performing general anaesthesia independently
  • Ensures that supply inventory is sufficient to meet the needs of the Internal Medicine service
  • Participates in daily communication with clients
  • Ensures that procedures, medications etc. are accurately documented on ICU sheets in advance of daily invoicing
  • Responsible for documenting all patient information while on shift and for ensuring that this information is transmitted in a timely and efficient manner to staff in Wards, ICU, and to other Internal Medicine staff who may be involved in individual cases
  • Ensures that all equipment is properly maintained, and that maintenance is documented
  • Keeps Internal Medicine procedure areas clean and organized
  • Ensures that Internal Medicine service assistants are accomplishing their duties and that Human Resources is aware of any performance issues
  • Performs other duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Strong technical skills (venipuncture, I.V. catheter placement) essential
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Ability to recognize and establish priorities within the Internal Medicine service and ability to take direction as provided
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and remain calm in stressful situations
  • Demonstrated computer skills
  • Ability to work well within a team environment

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Graduate of an accredited program for Animal Health Technologists
  • Demonstrated skills, experience and training that would qualify the individual for a position of responsibility within the Internal Medicine service
  • Anaesthetic background preferred

WORKING HOURS

  • This position is based on working 10-hour shifts, 4 days per week between Monday and Friday
  • At a future date, regular hours may include Saturday shifts
  • As a member of the overall CWVS team, you may be required to assist in other areas of the hospital when your service is not in need of you, or if the doctor on the service is away. This could involve working any shift within the twenty-four-hour operating day of the hospital including weekends and holidays
